Family Therapy 101: Hierarchy and Boundaries
When there are marital or relationship issues, boundaries can sometimes get skewed, and the family dynamic can become unbalanced.

Children may even get unintentionally pulled into the mix, forming triangles that can complicate things even further.

This is why it’s so important to maintain a strong and healthy relationship between partners. Keeping a clear sense of hierarchy and mutual respect within the relationship helps set the foundation for healthier family dynamics overall.

In therapy, we learn how to recognize these patterns and how to protect the boundaries that preserve the integrity of each family member's role. When the foundation is solid, the entire family can thrive. 💙

Family Therapy 101: Hierarchy & Boundaries

A healthy family system has a clear structure. Imagine a simple diagram: parents at the top, children at the bottom. The key is the boundary between them.

✅ A dashed line allows children to step into the hierarchy at appropriate times, giving them some control over their lives while maintaining parental guidance. This balance fosters independence and security.

❌ A solid line—where children have no say—can feel rigid and controlling, leaving them powerless.

❌ A dotted line, where children can enter the hierarchy whenever they want, creates instability and lack of structure.

Healthy families find balance: clear leadership from parents with room for children to grow, make decisions, and develop autonomy in a safe and structured way.
