Is obesity the most dangerous health problem we face?

I think it is.

When I founded Performance Medicine 18 years ago, it was with one main purpose: to treat obesity.

I kept seeing patients who were on multiple medications—diabetes, hypertension, depression, arthritis, high cholesterol.

But the root problem wasn’t being addressed.

👉 They were obese.

When you treat the obesity, something powerful happens:

- Blood pressure improves
- Diabetes improves
- Depression lifts
- Joint pain gets better
- Cholesterol normalizes

All those prescriptions? Often unnecessary.

The real change comes from treating the obesity itself.

That’s why Performance Medicine exists—and why I believe obesity remains the most dangerous (and overlooked) health problem of our time.

As I often say, “muscle is the currency of aging.” Muscle equals bone—without it, you’re at risk for osteoporosis, and your brain won’t function as well. It’s not just about showing off at the gym or pressing more weight. It’s about your overall health.

Let’s prioritize building and maintaining muscle, not just for performance, but for lifelong vitality.

Obesity is not just a personal struggle; it is a disease that affects millions. The American Medical Association recognized this in 2013, and it's time we all understand its implications. Many people believe that obesity is simply a matter of willpower, but this misconception can lead to stigma and ineffective treatment. As healthcare professionals, we must shift our perspective and approach obesity with compassion and understanding. Recognizing obesity as a disease allows us to provide better care and support to our patients. It’s crucial to address the metabolic issues at play rather than attributing blame. This understanding can be a relief for patients who have long felt judged. Let’s work together to change the narrative around obesity. By doing so, we can improve health outcomes and reduce the stigma associated with this condition.
