Olympic Games - Curling Residents participated in a structured therapeutic exercise group that incorporated preparatory warm-up activities to enhance range of motion, strength, and coordination prior to engaging in this week's Olympic-themed activity, Curling. Following warm-up, residents participated in a simulated curling task in which they alternated turns propelling a weighted "disk" toward a designated target. The activity required residents to maintain dynamic standing balance while performing controlled weight shifting and coordinated upper extremity movements to generate appropriate force and direction. This intervention targeted dynamic standing balance, postural control, graded weight shifting, upper extremity range of motion, motor planning, and coordination. Additionally, the group format facilitated social engagement, peer encouragement, problem-solving, and strategy development, promoting both physical and cognitive participation.

"Valentine's Day Games" - Skilled therapeutic activities were provided utilizing Valentine-themed tasks to address upper extremity range of motion, bilateral coordination, hand-eye coordination, and sustained attention to task. Residents participated in structured tabletop maze activities requiring controlled upper extremity movements to navigate a ball through various pathways toward a designated goal. Tasks promoted motor planning, visual tracking, graded movement control, and problem-solving skills. Verbal cues and task setup were provided as needed to tacilitate engagement, sequencing, and successful task completion.
Activities were graded to match residents' functional abilities while promoting active participation and therapeutic benefit.

We at Spring Arbor of Bristol have hosted an exciting Olympic event, replicating the Winter Olympics' Biathlon. Following a structured warm-up focused on upper and lower extremity range of motion, strength, and coordination, residents engaged in Olympic-themed therapeutic activities facilitated jointly by therapy and activity staff. Initially, residents were challenged to maintain standing balance on a simulated "snow" surface, a compliant and dynamic base of support designed to promote core engagement, postural control, and balance reactions. Subsequently, residents progressed to the target component of the biathlon activity, aiming bean bags at Olympic ring targets while maintaining dynamic standing, thus addressing upper extremity range of motion, coordination, and controlled weight shifting. This activity promoted functional balance, motor planning, and endurance within a motivating group setting, while fostering social engagement and peer encouragement, ultimately supporting psychosocial well-being in addition to physical performance.

"Cupid's Challenge" - Residents participated in Valentine's Day-themed therapeutic activities designed to promote both cognitive engagement and physical participation. The session incorporated dynamic standing balance, upper-extremity range of motion, coordination, and problem-solving skills as residents competed in a heart-themed bean bag toss activity.
Participants were required to plan their throws, sequence actions, and adjust force and accuracy to maximize point totals, resulting in a friendly tie-breaker between the top two competitors.
The session concluded with an additional activity, referred to as the "Heartbreaker," in which residents alternated turns tossing balls through paper-sealed cups arranged in a heart formation. This activity further challenged motor planning, visual-perceptual skills, and hand-eye coordination while encouraging social interaction and turn-taking. A small chocolate treat was awarded as positive reinforcement, promoting motivation and sustained participation through-ut the session.

We are so excited to participate in our Winter Olympic Games!

Winter Olympics - Ice Hockey Olympics
In commemoration of the Winter Olympics, residents engaged in a therapeutic ice hockey-themed activity designed to promote physical rehabilitation and social interaction. The session commenced with structured warm-up exercises focusing on upper and lower extremity range of motion, coordination, and motor planning. Residents received assistance from therapy staff to achieve optimal positioning and body mechanics, enabling them to safely strike simulated "pucks" toward a target net.
Although several residents reported no prior experience using a hockey stick, they demonstrated strong engagement and adaptability throughout the activity.
Participation required activation of core musculature, dynamic standing balance, bilateral upper extremity use, and hand-eye coordination. This activity promoted functional mobility, balance, strength, and coordination while encouraging social interaction and participation in a meaningful, seasonal activity.

Strategic Games
Therapy staff led a structured group activity utilizing Connect 4 and Kerplunk to enhance cognitive and motor skills, requiring residents to sustain attention, follow multi-step directions, employ problem-solving and planning skills, and recall game rules to compete successfully with peers. The activity targeted fine motor coordination through grasping and manipulating game pieces, dynamic reaching, and upper extremity control, promoting cognitive engagement, hand-eye coordination, and functional participation in a social group setting.
