HEALTHY TIP OF THE DAY

Healthier Gut, Healthier Aging

It is very important to have a healthy gut. Healthy gut balance enhances our health by supporting our immune system, vitamin production, increased energy, and improved metabolism. It decreases cancer risk, improves cardiac health and it helps balance nervous system functions amongst many other things.

Some of the foods that are a good source of Bifidobacterium which is essential for healthy gut are:

1. Kefir (I love this with little bit of honey)
2. Homemade Sauerkraut
3. Sourdough bread
4. Kombucha (not for me)
5. Kimchi
6. Other fermented foods

If you suffer from seasonal allergies buy honey from a local beekeepers (it has pollens from the trees and plants that grow in your area which helps your immune system build a response to it) and have a teaspoon of honey daily. It will help control your allergy symptoms.

***Studies on this are inconclusive because not many were done, but in my practice I have seen improvements in allergy symptoms

***That said because of clostridium botulinum honey should not be given to children under age 12 months. It could cause infant botulism which is an illness that causes muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, and trouble breathing.

Learn to grow some of your food. Learn to cook new dishes, play with herbs and different tastes. Learn jiu jitsu, karate, climb a mountain. Listen to music, learn to play an instrument, solve puzzles, stimulate your mind.

It might not be easy, but it is a journey. Challenging but rewarding, and most importantly this is your life, your health. Take it back.

The quote above by William Osler is one of my favorites. I always felt that medicine is about humanity; spirit, mind and body. We are all more than some of our cells and functions. We are human because inside our body lives a spirit that needs nurturing through faith, love and good deeds.
