Honors student Kalena Eaton had the incredible opportunity to present her research at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in Denver this past February!
As part of her honors thesis, Kalena worked with Dr. Ratcliff to explore how the race of both officers and victims in excessive use-of-force incidents affects perceptions of justifiability and punishment. Through a series of participant studies, Kalena uncovered valuable insights into these complex dynamics.
This semester, Kalena expanded her research to include a larger, more diverse global sample via an online platform, gaining new perspectives and a deeper confidence in her work. We’re so proud of Kalena’s dedication and growth throughout this project, we can’t wait to see what comes next!

Scholars Day 2025 was a fantastic showcase of the innovation, passion, and dedication of our students.
Students from across campus came together to share the research they’ve poured their time, energy, and passion into. Whether presenting to a full room or having one-on-one conversations, every project sparked new questions and inspired meaningful discussion.

Thank you to everyone who made the day such a success. It’s moments like these that remind us how lucky we are to work with such an amazing community!

We want to say a big thank you to the panel of Honors students who came together to share their thesis experiences with Dr. Greens HON 395 Thesis Practicum class!
It featured Emily Akyuz (Sociology/Political Science)
Leah Iwanitzki (Math EP)
Rachel Kinsey (Social Work & WGS)
Justice Crane (English)
Makayla Seidle-Beach (Political Science)
Their stories and advice provided valuable insights for students preparing for their own thesis projects. It was a great opportunity to learn from those who have already navigated the journey and gain tips for success. Best of luck to all those starting their thesis adventure!

We were so fortunate to have Jennifer Marie Brissett join us for a special Writer’s Craft Session! She discussed her novel Destroyer of Light, an afro-futuristic retelling of Persephone with the class and read a few of her newer projects at the forum. As a writer, software engineer, and web developer, her unique take on science and speculative fiction has offered insights into the writing process, storytelling, and her personal experiences that were truly eye-opening. Huge thanks to Jennifer for sharing her wisdom and her work with us!
