Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind. Yoga Sutra 1.2. Practicing yoga on a regular basis is believed to give individuals control of their mind and body. Being able to get your senses firmly under control allows you to see what lies in the your own sub- conscious mind. We know the basic functions of the body, how about the mind. The mind consist of aspects of ourselves that produce our judgements, discrimination, intelligence and will. The Ego is a function of our personality, identity and where we get our sense of self. Both the mind and body are sense organs that are focused on categorizing and identifying sensual input from the outside world. Our inner world is governed by our spirit. The senses relay information to the mind and then the ego and finally our intelligence which is the gate keeper to our spirit. all this to say that it is important that we govern our own intelligence and are fully aware of ourselves. If we are trying to have more self control, the best way to do that is to fall in love with learning as much about ourselves as possible and to practice self governance and stilling the thoughts and sensations of the mind so that we can truly be aware of our own sub consciousness or spirit. This is why religion is used by many for power and control. Seems like whoever is the gatekeeper to your spirit has the key to your mind and your body. By stilling the fluctuations of the mind, we become more connected with our own spirit and become the gate keeper to ourselves.

Yoga is to unjoin our soul from our body/mind which can often ruminate, get lost, distracted, restrictive and confused . Yoga allows us to focus the mind in one direction without deviation because the mind becomes fully restrained when concentration is focused on one point. Yoga is not based on the intellect rather on our direct experience. It is a psychosomatic technique and can only be experienced through practice and direct perception. The teachings of yoga is a collection of knowledge and realizations handed down from previous generations as an attempt to interpret that which can only be perceived. Therefore the first sutra in "The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali" explains how yoga is perceived through the practice of yoga itself.
