Yesterday STR's Gambling Ambassador Ricky went onto the Real Talk TV Podcast with host Darryl Buchannan to talk about bringing Education, Awareness, and Prevention to problem gamblers under the Gambling Ambassador Project which is funded by the Massachusetts Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling Prevention.

Today Outreach Coordinator Quetcy and Members of STR attended the Annual flag planting for International Overdose Awareness Month in Boston. While there members of the community from all over the state showed up to plant flags in remembrance of those who lost their lives to overdose.

Yesterday Stairway to Recovery Outreach Coordinator Quetcy attended the Taunton International Overdose Awareness Day march. Where members of the community marched from Taunton Peer Recovery Support Center to Memorial Park in Taunton. This was an amazing testament to the community coming together to bring awareness to the lives lost to overdoses. While at the park there were motivational speakers, resource tables and more.

🎉HUGE shoutout to STR member, Bob! 🎉

Today, is a double celebration Bob’s BIRTHDAY AND his ONE YEAR of SOBRIETY after nearly 50 years of battling both his mental health & substance use disorder. Let that sink in....FIFTY YEARS....and today, he’s standing tall, sober, & thriving showing RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE & the Peer to Peer Recovery model works! 🙌

Bob, a proud U.S. Army Veteran, has been with us at Stairway to Recovery for exactly one year today & from the moment he walked through our doors, he’s brought nothing but strength, resilience, & positivity to our community. Whether he’s showing up for groups, connecting with others, or dropping his famous “HOOAH!” around the building (which always brings a smile), Bob reminds us what recovery, accountability, & community truly looks like.

He’s shown up every single day, no matter what, ready to learn, grow, & support those around him. He holds himself accountable & continues to build strong bonds with his STR family, never afraid to put in the work.

We sat with Bob this afternoon after eating delicious pizza & cake because he wanted to add something to this post. Here’s what Bob had to say:

"All I can say is, when I was discharged from the military, due to my mental health diagnosis I self-isolated & fed my substance use disorder to the point I was unhoused for almost 50 years, until I found myself at Stairway to Recovery. When I walked through the door, I was welcomed by a gentleman that saw my U.S. Army Veteran hat & he said that he was a Peer Leader here & also retired from the military, which instantly made me comfortable, because a fellow retired brother in arms was here for my six.
This has been one of the best years I've had in my life, & I am so thankful for my newly found family here at Stairway to Recovery. I can't thank you all enough!!"

Bob, you inspire us all, and we are so proud of you and grateful to walk beside you on your recovery journey. 🎂🎉💪

Please Save a Date.

On September 9th, which is right around the corner, STR will be collaborating with MOAR - Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery Peer 2 Peer Recovery Support Center Plymouth Recovery Center Taunton Peer Recovery Center Falmouth Recovery Center RISE Recovery Support Center PIER Recovery Center of Cape Cod to bring the Brockton community an amazing event. The name of the event is "Unity in Diversity". Each center will have a resource table set up to bring awareness & education to our diverse community on the pathways of recovery.

Furthermore, we will have multiple guest speakers coming to speak about their own personal experiences with recovery coming from diverse backgrounds themselves. Each PRSC (Peer Recovery Support Center) will be bringing culturally appropriate food dishes that represents the culture from where their recovery center is located at for the community to enjoy. We will have music, games, E's Ice Cream & More, Silly Faces with Sarah , and plenty of fun here for the community.

Last night, Stairway to Recovery was honored to attend & host a resource table at the Annual Brockton Overdose Vigil at Massasoit Community College. This is a powerful event held in remembrance of lives lost to overdose and to help support those still battling with Substance Use Disorders.

Substance Use Disorder continues to affect countless families and communities not only in Massachusetts, but across the nation. Unfortunately, overdose still remains one of the leading causes of preventable death, but hopefully through awareness, education, and events like last night, we can break the stigma and help save lives!

Today, the STR members joined in on the fun at D.W. Park’s Centennial Birthday Celebration and what an incredible day it was!

From the petting zoo and hay rides, to hiking the trails and meeting new people, we had a great time connecting with our community. But for us, being there meant more than just enjoying the festivities it was about showing the community that recovery is real, it’s happening, and it’s possible.

Any chance to engage with the community is also a chance to break down stigma around substance use disorder. By showing up, sharing space, and being part of something positive, we’re helping shift the conversation.....one event at a time.
