She almost didn’t make the call.
The cough had been around for months, but she had learned to live with it. She told herself it was allergies. She blamed the Oklahoma weather. She convinced herself it wasn’t worth “bothering a doctor.”
But one morning, she woke up tired (again), even after a full night’s sleep, and something inside her said, enough.
That one appointment changed everything.
It gave her answers she didn’t know were connected.
It gave her a plan that finally made sense.
It gave her peace of mind.
I see this story play out all the time. Symptoms get brushed aside until the day someone decides to take the smallest step forward. And that step becomes the turning point.
Your next visit could be that turning point.
From worry to clarity.
From exhaustion to energy.
From guessing to knowing.
Sometimes the biggest change begins with a single call.

Imagine this: you’re asleep, but your breathing... pauses. Over and over again, for small moments of time all throughout the night, your body goes without the oxygen it needs to function and repair.

That is precisely what happens with sleep apnea. And the symptoms can look like this:
• Loud, chronic snoring
• Waking up often at night
• Feeling exhausted no matter how long you slept
• Morning headaches that seem to linger

Sleep apnea can be a scary rabbit hole to dive down. But I don't want you to be fearful because treatment is not only possible, it’s life-changing. And it's possible when you book an appointment with Oklahoma Pulmonary Care and get the care you need. Even when it may not feel like it, restful nights and energized days are within reach.

All too often, I only think about my health when it starts to worsen... But the absolute best way to treat a symptom is to prevent it in the first place.
The truth is, most of us wait until symptoms force our hand; The lingering cough, the fatigue we can’t shake, the shortness of breath that complicates day-to-day commonalities. But by then, the body has often been asking for help for a while.
That’s why regular check-ups matter. They’re not just appointments on a calendar. They’re our chance to catch the small changes before they grow into bigger problems.
For the lungs especially, prevention makes all the difference. Something as simple as a routine visit today could be the reason you never struggle with your breathing in the future.
So let me ask you: when was your last check-up?

One of the most surprising things I share with patients is how closely the lungs and the heart depend on each other.

Think of it this way: your lungs bring oxygen into the body, and your heart pumps that oxygen-rich blood everywhere it needs to go. They’re two halves of the same system.

When the lungs aren’t working well, from asthma, COPD, or scarring, the heart has to work harder to move blood through. Over time, that extra strain can affect blood pressure, heart rhythm, and even heart muscle strength.

And the reverse is true: when the heart is weakened, fluid can build up in the lungs.

That’s why some patients with heart conditions feel short of breath even when their lungs are otherwise healthy.

This overlap is one of the reasons I never look at symptoms in isolation. Shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling in the ankles... they may not be “just the lungs” or “just the heart.” More often, it’s a conversation between the two.

What I want you to remember is this: protecting your lungs protects your heart, and caring for your heart protects your lungs. The two are partners in your health, and both deserve attention.

In 20+ years of practice, one of the most overlooked symptoms I see of sleep apnea is morning headaches.

Patients usually tell me, “I figured it was stress,” or, “I thought I just slept wrong.”But here’s what many don’t realize: morning headaches can be a sign of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea happens when your airway repeatedly collapses during sleep. Each pause in breathing lowers oxygen levels, disrupts deep sleep, and puts added strain on the body. One of the most common results? Waking up with a dull, persistent headache.

It’s not just about pain in the morning. Untreated sleep apnea can affect blood pressure, heart health, memory, and energy levels throughout the day. But because the symptom feels so ordinary, people rarely bring it up and it goes unchecked for years.

When I hear a patient describe frequent morning headaches, I ask about snoring, fatigue, and interrupted sleep. That’s often where the bigger picture comes into focus.

So here’s what I want you to know:
If you wake up with headaches more often than not, don’t brush it off. It’s not just a “normal” part of life. It could be your body’s way of telling you that something important is happening at night.

And with the right evaluation and treatment, many patients see those morning headaches, and the risks behind them, finally disappear.

When patients tell me, “I thought this was just aging,” here’s what I say:

Yes, our bodies do change with age. But shortness of breath, a lingering cough, or waking up tired every morning should never be dismissed as “just getting older.”

There’s always a reason. Sometimes it’s the lungs, sometimes it’s the heart, sometimes it’s sleep. And often, it’s a combination of all three. My job is to help untangle that puzzle.

The truth is, lung conditions can overlap with what people assume are “normal” aging symptoms. That’s why so many patients delay seeking help, even as their quality of life slips away.

But here’s what I want you to remember: aging may change your body, but it should not take away your ability to breathe comfortably.

If your breathing feels different, it deserves attention.

If you’ve been told “it’s just age,” it’s worth a second look.

Because many times, it’s not just aging. And getting the right diagnosis can change not only how long you live, but how well you live.

Asthma and COPD are often confused, as both can cause coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing. But here’s what you need to know:

Asthma is an inflammatory condition. Think of your airways like flexible tubes. In asthma, those tubes get irritated and inflamed, sometimes tightening up suddenly when you’re exposed to triggers like allergens, cold air, or exercise. The key here is that asthma is reversible. With the right treatment, the airways can calm down and open back up.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), on the other hand, is more about damage over time. Instead of the airways being inflamed and tightening temporarily, the structure of the lungs themselves becomes damaged, usually from long-term irritants like cigarette smoke, air pollution, or workplace exposures. That damage makes it harder for air to move in and out, and unlike asthma, it doesn’t fully “reverse.”

Both conditions need care, but the approach is different:

With asthma, treatment focuses on controlling inflammation and preventing flare-ups.

With COPD, the focus is on slowing progression, protecting lung function, and improving quality of life.

The biggest takeaway?

If you’ve been told you have “just a cough” or “probably asthma,” but your symptoms don’t improve, it’s worth asking more questions. A clear diagnosis changes everything about how we treat and support your breathing.

In medicine, the lungs are often seen as one system. But I see something bigger.

Your lungs connect to your heart, your sleep, your energy, your daily life. That means every decision I make as a pulmonologist has to look at the whole picture, not just one test result.

I’m Dr. Michael Scott, and for more than 20 years I’ve helped patients find clarity when their symptoms felt confusing and scary. My philosophy is simple: every patient deserves time, careful listening, and a treatment plan that fits their life.

Pulmonology may be my specialty, but people are my focus.
