Bob was enjoying a trip to Colorado with his wife when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. Even though he was wearing a helmet, he suffered a traumatic brain injury along with several broken bones, including his skull, ribs, pelvis, back, collarbone, and shoulder blade. Both of his lungs collapsed, and he had bruises all over his body. He went into respiratory failure and had to be placed on a ventilator at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital. There, doctors placed two chest tubes to help his damaged lungs.
Bob spent 20 days in the ICU. During that time, he wasn’t able to come off the ventilator and needed a tracheostomy to help him breathe. He also had a feeding tube placed because he couldn’t eat or drink by mouth. Once he was stable, he was transferred back to Oklahoma and admitted to Cornerstone Specialty Hospital in Broken Arrow for continued care.
When Bob arrived, he was still on the ventilator, very weak, and had trouble staying alert because of his brain injury. He wasn’t able to move on his own and needed full help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and using the restroom.
But with the help of his care team, including doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and rehabilitation therapists, Bob started to make big strides. After just over a month, he was completely off the ventilator and breathing on his own. He also began eating and drinking again with some assistance.
Bob continued to improve. He could now walk over 400 feet using a walker and only needed minimal help. He was also more independent with his daily activities and had gained back some strength and movement.
To keep building on his recovery, Bob was transferred to a neurorehabilitation facility in Texas. There, he kept progressing in both his strength and thinking skills. His wife later shared that Bob is now back home, driving, working, and “leading almost a normal life again. Bob is a walking, talking miracle man. Many thanks to Cornerstone for your part in his recovery.”
We’re so proud to have been part of Bob’s journey. Way to go, Bob!
