Acknowledging and appreciating your partner’s effort matters more than it seems, especially around repair. When you name the good your partner is doing, you meet a deep attachment need to feel seen and valued, and you reinforce the behaviors that build safety over time. This is especially important because some people have a history where apologies were punished, dismissed, or used against them, which makes repairing feel risky in their body. For those partners, apologizing takes courage. When their effort is noticed and appreciated, their nervous system learns that accountability leads to closeness, not danger. Over time, this makes it easier to repair again, to take responsibility, and to trust that the relationship can hold hard moments with care.
