When you call for an an ambulance in Nebraska, who comes?

Tonight, somewhere in Nebraska, a pager will sound in the dark. It might be on a kitchen counter beside a half-finished cup of tea, on a nightstand next to a sleeping spouse, clipped to the belt of someone who just got home from a long day at work, or tucked into the pocket of someone trying to rest before tomorrow begins.

And when it goes off, someone will stand up.

They will leave the warmth of their home.
They will leave their family.
They will leave their bed, their supper, their evening, their plans.
They will step into the cold or the heat or the wind, and they will drive toward someone else’s worst moment.

They will go, not because they are paid, or because it’s easy. They will go because someone needs help.

In our small towns, the ambulance doesn’t come from a distant city. It comes from down the street.

Volunteers are farmers, teachers, mechanics, nurse’s aides, and the neighbors you waved to yesterday.

And there are fewer of them now.

The same few people answering again and again.
The same volunteers missing sleep, missing meals, missing time with the people they love — because someone else needed them more in that moment.

They keep showing up, but they are getting tired, and many of them are aging.

And they cannot do it alone forever.

One day, the call might be for your house - for your child or parent.

It might be for the person you love most in this world.

When that day comes, you won’t ask how much money a volunteer makes. You won’t ask how tired they are. You won’t ask how many years they’ve been doing it.

You’ll just pray that someone answers.

Rural Nebraska has always taken care of its own. That’s who we are. We show up. We help.
We carry each other when things are hard.

But that only works if people are still willing to step forward.

You don’t have to know everything today.
You don’t have to be perfect.
You don’t have to be fearless.

You just have to be willing.

Because someday, the life on the other end of that call might belong to someone you love.

And someday, the person they’re waiting for
might be you.

Please consider reaching out to your local EMT district to see how you can help!

Last night we had our Broken Bow Ambulance Service Christmas party, and it was a great reminder of what makes this service special. It was a chance to slow down, come together with our families, share an amazing meal, and enjoy some well-earned laughs with the people we serve alongside every day.

We were also proud to recognize several members with our annual awards:

🌧️ Black Cloud Award
Presented to Becka Neumiller – for the member who somehow always manages to ensure there’s at least one call when she’s on shift.

👶 Rookie of the Year Award
Presented to Bobby Harrold – for a new member who has taken initiative from day one, gone above and beyond expectations, stepped up whenever needed, and shown a strong commitment to learning, teamwork, and serving our community.

🌅 Horizon Award
Presented to Mike Jilg – recognizing forward-thinking leadership, dedication to growth, and the willingness to help guide our service toward what’s next while keeping our core values front and center.

🏅EMS Provider of the Year Award
Presented to Chief David Baltz – for everything he does for this service as both Chief and a Paramedic. From taking transports, being available when we need coverage, making sacrifices behind the scenes, and constantly pushing us to be better and do more for our patients and community, his commitment does not go unnoticed.

Thank you to everyone who makes Broken Bow Ambulance Service what it is. We are incredibly grateful for our team, our families who support us, and the opportunity to serve this community together.

We want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who assisted with a recent rollover incident.

Incidents like this are a strong reminder that emergency response is truly a team effort. We’re grateful for the outstanding teamwork and professionalism from TriCity LifeNet Kearney, NE, Broken Bow Police Department, Custer County Sheriffs Office, and Broken Bow Vol Fire Department.

We also want to recognize and thank the trained community members who stopped to help before and as responders arrived. Your willingness to step up and assist made a real difference.

It takes all of us working together to keep our community safe, and we’re thankful for each of you.

This weekend, we had the privilege of hosting Lincoln Fire & Rescue as they delivered Resuscitation Academy here in Broken Bow.

We’re incredibly grateful to the LFR team for taking the time to travel to Broken Bow and share their knowledge and experience with us. Resuscitation Academy focuses on evidence-based, high-performance cardiac arrest care, emphasizing coordinated CPR, airway management, data-driven improvement, and team communication, all with the goal of improving patient outcomes.

Opportunities like this make a real difference for our providers and, ultimately, for our community. Thank you again to Lincoln Fire & Rescue and Resuscitation Academy for investing your time and expertise in rural Nebraska and helping us continue to raise the bar in resuscitation care.

❄️ Cold Temps and Slick Roads ❄️
We’re seeing cold temperatures and icy, slick road conditions continuing. Please slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and take your time getting where you need to go.

If you don’t have to be out, it’s a good night to stay home and stay warm. If you do, drive carefully and look out for one another.

Stay safe and warm!
