This week on our Feeling Wheel series, we’re shining a light on something we all strive for — happiness😊

But happiness isn’t just about laughing all the time or always being upbeat. It can be calm. It can be quiet. It can be the feeling of finishing a task, being with someone you trust, or just having a moment of peace.

Happiness shows up in many ways:
💛 Feeling optimistic
🩷 Feeling confident
💜 Feeling strong
💙 Feeling joyful
❤️ Feeling aroused
🧡 Being filled with love

The truth is, happiness isn’t a destination — it’s a feeling that comes and goes. And that’s okay. What matters is noticing it, understanding what brings it into your life, and learning how to care for your mental and emotional wellness along the way.

That’s where we come in.

At The Counseling Center, we’re here to support you through all the feelings. The highs, the lows, and everything in between. Whether you’re working on building healthy habits, managing stress, or just trying to figure out what happiness even means to you, we’re here to help. (Check out the link in our bio for more information)

This week, we challenge you to notice one thing from this week that sparks happiness. Whether its a sunset, a coffee chat, a walk, a song, a sunset, a deep breath and more. Pay attention to those little moments.

Happy National Awareness Day from The Counseling Center

Grief isn’t just about loss through death. We often miss the quieter griefs, like the loss of a role, identity, dream, or sense of self.

Empty nesters may grieve their parenting role.
Retirees may miss their career identity.
Caregivers may mourn the time they hoped to have.
Aging can bring grief over lost mobility or independence.
Even political outcomes can bring grief for the future we imagined.

When grief goes unnamed, it can feel isolating. But naming it gives us permission to feel, to seek support, and to heal.
Grief takes time—but with compassion, we can move through it with strength and renewed hope. 🦋💜

"In any tough moment or day we can practice mindfulness. It’s simply practicing awareness of what’s going on, internally or in our environment. Noticing anxiety, disturbing news or worry. Nothing to do about it, just notice. No judgment. Let it be. In this frenzied world of ours, allow yourself to do nothing for a moment other than observe. Take a few deep breaths. This might create a bit of spaciousness. In this space we might smell the freshness of morning air, notice the intricacies of a colorful, blooming flower or hear the excitement of birds at dusk.”

“When we are confronted with something that seems too much, we need to take an action to move our bodies, even if only 90 seconds, walk, wiggle your toes, stretch , etc, which can recalibrate all we are reacting too. This can help us to respond with humor, gratitude and clarity of seeing an opportunity in a dilemma instead of spiraling into overthinking and creating negative narratives which serve to make us feel more out of control. “

THE TCC TIP OF THE DAY:

"You can start your day over any time!"

This philosophy embraces flexibility, mindfulness, positivity, compassion and resilience. So often we get into all or nothing, rigid thinking and miss the opportunity to see the silver linings. Let’s choose to move closer towards the light even for a few moments instead of staying stuck for the rest of the day or longer.

On this day of Juneteenth…

Filmmaker and documentarian Ken Burns gave an eloquent and poignant commencement speech at Brandeis University in May 2024, at which he quoted James Baldwin…

“In a filmed interview I conducted with the writer James Baldwin, more than 40 years ago, he said, "No one was ever born who agreed to be a slave, who accepted it. That is, slavery is a condition imposed from without. Of course, the moment I say that," Baldwin continued, "I realize that multitudes and multitudes of people for various reasons of their own enslave themselves every hour of every day to this or that doctrine, this or that delusion of safety, this or that lie. Anti-Semites, for example," he went on, "are slaves to a delusion. People who hate Negroes are slaves. People who love money are slaves. We are living in a universe really of willing slaves, which makes the concept of liberty and the concept of freedom so dangerous," he finished. Baldwin is making a profoundly psychological and even spiritual statement, not just a political or racial or social one. He knew, just as Lincoln knew, that the enemy is often us. We continue to shackle ourselves with chains we mistakenly think is freedom.”

This week and this holiday beg us to wonder, what psychological constriction does each of us impose on ourselves, and each other that we wish to relinquish or relieve? And how do we strive and challenge ourselves toward this personal mission?

The question here posed is too important and delicate for one-size-fits-all recommendations. As masterfully articulated by Burns and Baldwin, we all suffer under the weight of our own biases—what we expect of ourselves, and how we see others. And so, on this holiday, we strive to simply do better.

Dear Friend of the Counseling Center,

This Thursday, from 6:30pm-8pm, we are partnering with the Reformed Church to host "Empty Nest, Full Plate". This is an evening of socializing, learning and discussion for empty nesters.

Some of you are in the process of guiding your children to their next destination, and others have transitioned fully to having kids in college. If you know someone who is going through the emotional transition of a new chapter, we hope you will send them this invitation.

Our own Jen Jordan will be leading the charge with insights and ideas for for you. Jen is experienced in nurturing individual growth and also, is one of the therapists at the Counseling Center leading the charge on couples counseling. She she will share ideas on how to ground oneself individually and how to recharge a marriage.

For the last 30 minutes, we will open the floor for questions.
We will be providing light eats, so an RSVP is helpful (though not required).
We hope to see you there!
