Getting a speech evaluation for your child can feel like a very overwhelming process 😵💫
Here are some things you can expect during a speech evaluation for your child. It’s important to remember that I never go into a home expecting a child to “perform” or do everything we may ask of them ✨
Sometimes kids barely come near me during an evaluation and that’s totally ok! It takes a while for some children to get comfortable with a new person❤️
My general process for evaluations:
1. Parent interview- this is where I get more in depth case history information, discuss concerns, and get an overall feel of what a family is looking for 📝
2. Observation- While I’m asking questions, I’ll also be observing the child to see how they are playing, how they interact with the parent, what they’re interested in, etc. 👀
3. Therapist-child interaction - Next I will interact and play with the child and take note of their play skills, ability to follow directions during play, and how they communicate during play. PLAY is the key word here! 🫧
4. Testing of specific skills - I usually get most information from the above steps but I also use informal testing measures and will ask parents if the child can do a specific skill or I will try to elicit the skill from the child. A lot of times, kids don’t like to “perform” on command so I go off of parent report. Again, your child does not need to “perform” in any way! We get a lot of great info just from playing with the child📚
5. Results and recommendations - The final step is going over all the results from the evaluation and discussing my recommendations. We go over any questions and discuss what therapy sessions would look like☀️
