šŸŽ’ Back to school which means the new backpack. Kids love picking out their own backpack, but it’s important as parents and caregivers to keep in mind if that’s the best size for their body . As a chiropractor, I see many kids with back, neck, shoulder pain, headaches, poor posture and more that can be linked to their heavy backpacks. With a new school year starting, let’s talk about backpack ergonomics and safety!

Here are a few simple tips to help protect your child’s growing spine:

šŸŽ’Check the Weight. A general rule of thumb is that a backpack should weigh no more than 10-15% of your child’s body weight.

šŸŽ’Wear It properly . Always use both padded and wide shoulder straps! Wearing a backpack over one shoulder shifts the weight and can cause muscle strain and posture problems. Tighten the straps so the backpack sits snugly against the middle of the back, not hanging low on the buttocks.

šŸŽ’Pack Smart. Place the heaviest items (like textbooks) closest to your child’s back. Use all of the compartments to distribute the weight evenly. For younger student, ask the teacher and district if they really need to bring their school tablets home everyday..plus less screen time!

šŸŽ’Choose the Right Backpack. Look for a backpack that is the right size for your child—not too big and hanging down low

If your child is complaining of back or neck pain, leaning forward to carry their backpack, headaches it’s a sign that something is wrong. Don’t ignore these symptoms!

At our office we see patients of all ages including kids! Dr. Deb has taken postgraduate classes with the ICPA and other courses specifically for kids. Treatment and adjustments a very different from what you think an adult adjustment is. Just because they don’t have ā€œback painā€ doesn’t mean it’s not important to have their spine and body checked and get body work done. There are so many benefits for the whole family.

Take advantage of the summer break to get your initial consultation booked and bring the kids in! They were just sitting in classrooms all school year and starting activities that they usually don’t do as often during the year. Just like adults, starting a new activity (swimming or other sports) or even just the increased frequency can add stress on the body.

These are just the most common reason you maybe experiencing back pain. It’s quick and easy to do a few stretches, maybe taken an over the counter medication or even prescriptions to get some relief but does it get to the reason why?

It’s that time of the year we do a shoe change! I often get questions, especially when kids start walking, what shoes are appropriate for them to walk in. Many kids are put in shoes that have big bulky soles, restricting and can’t feel the ground. I recommend shoes that are flexible, best flat and thing soles. But this weather is so nice! If you’re able to and the ground is free of glass, hot surfaces etc let them go barefoot as much as possible! There are so many benefits of walking and exploring with their bare feet
