Brookfield EMS

Brookfield EMS was requested for advanced life support (ALS) for a single vehicle accident. The patient was trapped in the vehicle to the point that access to provide medical care was not possible. After strong work by East Brookfield and Brookfield fire departments the patient was turned over to LifeFlight who had landed on the Quaboag Street boat ramp and was brought to the scene. The fact that the flight crew had landed and made their way to the scene illustrates just how difficult the extrication process was.

Good afternoon.
There are plenty of ambulance services that are busier than we are, so our best comparison is history.
In 2022, we had 814 calls and averaged 68 calls a month.
In 2023, we had 726 calls and averaged 65 calls a month.
In 2024, we had 810 calls and averaged 67 calls a month.
As of today, we are at 690 calls
In August of this year, we had 77 calls.
In September of this year, we had 92 calls.
So far in October, we have had 24 calls.
Ten of those calls came in a 22-hour period this past weekend October 4th and 5th.
One of those was a serious trauma that was transported to the trauma room at UMASS.
A mutual aid ambulance had to cover one call while we were already out.
Not all of those calls resulted in a patient being transported, but they all resulted in wear and tear on the staff and ambulance.

This morning we worked with East Brookfield Fire and EMS to treat a victim of a motorcycle accident that was transported by helicopter to UMASS Medical Center in Worcester.

With no aircraft close enough to get to Brookfield in a timely manner, the decision was made to meet Boston MedFlight at Harrington Hospital to transport a victim of a motorcycle accident.

It’s not something people would immediately think of but with the unusually hot weather lately, it’s worth sharing. 2 years ago this baby suffered 2nd degree burns over 30% of his body from being accidentally sprayed with a garden hose and firefighters have issued a fresh warning recently.

A garden hose exposed to direct sunlight during summer can heat the water inside the hose (not flowing) to 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit which can cause burns especially to children & animals.
Let the water flow a few minutes to cool before spraying on people or animals.

This was not a call our department ran. This is simply a reminder to let the water run until its cool before spraying a child or animal.

[Extreme Heat Watch] An Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for much of beginning Sun afternoon and continuing through Tue afternoon. The heat & humidity looks to peak Monday and Tuesday...when Heat Indices may reach between 105 and 110 degrees!
