On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable women whose vision and dedication shaped the history of DBE in the USA.

One of the most influential among them was Julie Cooke Adams, C.B.E., a pioneering leader whose work helped establish and expand the DBE across the United States.

In 1913, Mrs. Cooke Adams organized the first DBE chapter in Illinois, the Prince of Wales Chapter, but her leadership extended far beyond Illinois. She played a central role in the development of the National Society, serving as the first National President from 1920–1923 and again from 1929–1932.

Mrs. Cooke Adams was also instrumental in founding the British Home (Cantata Adult Life Services) in Brookfield, Illinois, serving as its president from its opening until 1955. Her lifelong commitment to service and community left a lasting legacy for generations of DBE members.

Her contributions were widely recognized. King George V appointed her an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in recognition of her service to the British people before and after the Great War. Queen Elizabeth II further honored her with the higher distinction of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.).

Upon her passing in 1960, members remembered her as a woman whose “life was one of dedicated service and unselfish devotion.”

Today, the legacy of Julie Cooke Adams and the many women like her whose leadership, vision, and commitment continues through members across the state.
