I had a rare and marvelous experience today. I made an appointment to visit a very special birthing clinic founded by Robin Lim, CNN's Hero of the Year 2011. She has delivered countless babies and saved even more and their mothers. The clinic provides free medical care for the community, but most importantly free prenatal care, free labor and delivery and post partum care as well. There are ten midwives in all now who dedicate themselves to changing birth practices in Indonesia.
I had a tour of the facility that may not have air conditioning or decorated spaces, but is filled with compassion, no marginalization, no prejudices of any kind. There is a genuine interest in patients and co- workers alike. No appointments. Come when you need, stay as long as you need and are satisfied. Acupuncture provided by Chinese female doctors is also free for any complaint from trouble sleeping and loss of appetite to sciatica for the pregnant women anytime they desire. The community receives free acupuncture by the same doctors for any complaint they may present with.
I had a marvelous session for the swelling in my legs and ankles that I always suffer with in extreme heat and humidity. My blood pressure and pulse were taken, my tongue, the organ that tells all, was thoroughly examined and I got advice about how to drink hot water, eat ginger and stay away from the foods associated with the raw food movement. Massage was contraindicated. Keep up the exercise. I am in Bali for yoga, everyday, for goodness sake.

It seems that many of the changes we parents of the sixties and seventies fought so hard for, concerning birthing and total family participation have lost their fashion and appeal in twenty- first century America. But the ideals and practices are growing stronger in Bali.
BTW, I turned down the job offer but will be returning for another acupuncture treatment. Anybody out there have a recommendation for an acupuncturist in Atlanta, Georgia, USA?
