START-SD is a federal program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) through four Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) grants to complete work to increase access to and effectiveness of prevention, treatment and recovery services for substance use disorders in South Dakota. Our current project, START-SD Impact, is a four-year program focused on providing sup

Mental health and substance use are deeply connected—treating them separately just doesn’t work.

Study after study confirms what lived experience already shows: substance use disorder and mental health challenges are intertwined. One often fuels the other, and both deserve understanding—not judgment.

People are complex, whole beings.
We are not just a diagnosis, a behavior, or a label.
So why would care be split into pieces?

True healing happens when we treat the whole person—not just the symptoms.
That means compassionate, integrated care that honors every part of a person’s journey.
