Positive Rabies Case in Curry County

Curry County Animal Control has been notified of a confirmed positive rabies case in a fox located in Agness, Oregon.

Rabies is a serious and often fatal disease that can affect both animals and humans. While this is a rare occurrence in Curry County, Animal Control urges all residents to take appropriate precautions to safeguard themselves, their families, and their pets.

Safety Tips for Residents and Pet Owners:
β€’ Vaccinate pets: Ensure that dogs, cats, and ferrets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
β€’ Avoid wildlife contact: Do not approach or handle wild animals, especially those that appear sick, injured, or unusually tame.
β€’ Secure animals: Keep pets under supervision and livestock properly housed to reduce risk of exposure.
β€’ Report suspicious animals: Immediately notify Animal Control, local law enforcement, or Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife if you encounter animals displaying unusual or aggressive behavior.
β€’ Protect yourself: If you are bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately.

Curry County Animal Control is closely monitoring the situation and working with state health officials to ensure public safety.

For questions or to report unusual animal behavior, please contact:
β€’ Curry County Animal Control: 541-247-3366
β€’ Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW): 541-247-7605
