Historical Information about Central Building:
The Central Building, built in 1915 by the California and Oregon Lumber Co., served as the Administration Building for the Brookings Company which included: The Brookings Land and Townsite Co., The California and Oregon Lumber Co.; formerly the Brookings Timber and Box Co., The Brookings Commercial Co. Collectively, these companies owned and operated

the mill town of Brookings, which included the mill, a hotel, a hospital, a commissary, a theater and mill houses for its employees. They also owned a mercantile store. The Brookings Company purchases its first mill in the State of Oregon about 1906 and operated in Curry County from 1906 through 1929. From 1915 through 1921 the company cut and shipped approximately five million dollars worth of lumber each year from Curry County to Oakland, Redondo Beach, San Pedro and Long Beach, California. The Company owned and operated five steam schooners, including the S.S. They also owned a railroad, a lumber yard in Oakland, California and two barges on the Oakland Bay. The Company dedicated the mill town in 1920. The building was designed by Mr. Ward, Civil Engineer, who graduated from Cornell University in 1901 and came to Brookings in 1907.
