What were you doing at 14?

Forrest “Stan” Sharkey was hopping freight trains out of Indianapolis and living under a bridge in Bismarck. By 15, he was working nights as a hotel elevator operator for just $1 a day. He still chuckles as he recalls the characters he met and the stories that came with the job—just a glimpse into the many colorful memories he shares with his trademark humor.

From those bold beginnings to serving on the front lines of WWII, Stan’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. At 99, he continues to captivate everyone with the way he tells it.

💛 A Moment That Made Our Whole Day 💛

In Memory Care, we were treated to the most beautiful sight — our employee Abby and our resident Mary Lee sharing a joyful little dance together. 💃🧡

Their smiles, laughter, and the simple happiness of that moment filled the room and reminded us why we love what we do. These small connections create the biggest impact, and today our hearts grew a little fuller because of it.

Thank you, Abby, for always bringing sunshine to our residents, and thank you, Mary Lee, for sharing your beautiful spirit with all of us. 💛✨

✨ A Very Special Thank You to the Bobcat Student Council!✨

Today our Assisted Living and Memory Care residents were treated to the sweetest visit from the Brookings High School Student Council. ❤️🖤🤍

Students and residents spent the afternoon coloring, painting festive turkeys, and celebrating the joys of November together. The laughter, conversation, and creativity filled our halls with so much warmth! 🦃🎨

Moments like this remind us how meaningful intergenerational connections can be. Thank you, BHS Student Council, for sharing your time, talent, and kindness with our Edgewood family. Our residents are still smiling! 🤗❤️

🫡🇺🇸 Honoring Our Heroes 🇺🇸

Today we had a truly special Veterans Day celebration, hosted by the wonderful VFW George Dokken Post 2118 & Auxiliary. Our residents gathered together in gratitude and reflection to honor those who have served — including our very own veteran, Maynard. ❤️💙

A special thank you to the Brookings Police Department - SD by making Maynard’s Day more meaningful with a heartfelt visit, to Flowers On Main for the beautiful flowers delivered, and thoughtful letters from the children at the Boys & Girls Club of Brookings. Each gesture was a touching reminder of how deeply our community appreciates and honors its heroes.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this Veterans Day so memorable — and to all veterans, for your service and sacrifice. We are forever grateful.🫡

What a great day of Bingo we had today! Our residents were on a roll with lots of lucky winners, plenty of laughter, and even more smiles. We always love seeing the excitement when those cards fill up—nothing beats a good round of friendly competition and fun prizes! 💚

📖 Faith & Fellowship at Edgewood Brookings 💚

It was so wonderful to see our Memory Care and Assisted Living residents come together yesterday afternoon for a beautiful Bible Study led by Keri and Tina. The room was filled with smiles, heartfelt reflection, and a true sense of peace and community. Moments like these remind us how faith can bring everyone together in the most meaningful way. ✨

🍂 Painting the Colors of Fall! 🍂
Our Memory Care residents spent the afternoon painting trees with their own choice of fall leaf colors during a fun painting class with Amanda! The creativity and bright autumn hues filled the room with warmth and smiles. What a wonderful way to celebrate the beauty of the season! 🎨 This morning residents also enjoyed some watercolor painting - a new favorite!

Our lovely ladies in Assisted Living had a blast playing Shake Dice today! The room was full of laughter, friendly competition, and of course—some fun treats for our winners! It’s always a joy to see everyone having such a great time together. 💕
