American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists South Dakota State University Chapter

The Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) is the student component of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). APhA is the largest and oldest association of pharmacists including as its members: practitioners, students, and scientists. SDSU's College of Pharmacy chapter is one of the almost 100 APhA-ASP chapters throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The SDSU chapter of APhA-ASP belongs to Region 5 (of 8) in the national structure. APhA-ASP National:

SCAPP is participating in Go Big, Give Blue — a two week campaign where student organizations across SDSU are raising support to grow, lead, and make an impact on campus.

Donations to SCAPP help us perform patient care screenings like we did at Legislative Days, provide health education to our community, host chapter events, attend regional and national conferences, and impact the health of the patient population we serve.

02/19/2026

On Monday, February 2nd 16 SCAPP members traveled to Canton, SD to perform free health screenings and education. This event was in collaboration with the South Dakota Cardiovascular Collaborative and helped Canton take one step closer to earning their Cardiac Ready Community Designation! The students were able to screen 31 patients and educate 51 community members while at the event. The students also enjoyed a delicious meal and friendly conversation with the community throughout the evening!

Last Thursday, we had our last chapter meeting of the semester! SCAPP members celebrated the holidays by wearing their best ugly Christmas sweaters! PPA and State A Thon also partnered to make several tie-blankets for pediatric patients at the Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls! Happy Holidays from SCAPP!

On Sunday, PPA and Operation Public Health attended Trunk or Treat at Grace Point Church. The pharmacy students greeted children from the community and provided education on medication safety! Happy Halloween from SCAPP!

On Sunday, Operation Mental Health hosted the 4th annual Walk for Hope 5K! All proceeds went to Emily's Hope! Thank you to all who joined us!

Over the past weekend, NCPA hosted patient care screenings for the Evergreen community located in the Pine Ridge Reservation. SCAPP members brought care packages for the families, provided a meal for the community, brought gifts for a raffle, and provided patient screenings. It was an awesome opportunity to learn about their culture and bring our services to them!

SCAPP is returning to the South Dakota Health Connect Festival! On Saturday, September 27th, SCAPP members will be providing blood pressure screenings, immunizations, and patient education to the Sioux Falls community! Come see us from 11 AM to 3 PM for a free health screening!

Last week was SCAPP week! SCAPP members celebrated with the first chapter meeting of the year, a bean bag tournament, pie a professor, and a pharmacy club cookout! We can't wait for what's in store for the rest of the semester!

Last week, members of SCAPP provided free health screenings and education at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron, SD! We completed blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol screenings and educated fairgoers about diabetes and heart health!

This past weekend, the SCAPP Exec Board came together for a productive and fun-filled retreat! They planned and discussed different events while setting goals for the upcoming school year. They also strengthened their relationships with team-building activities, and enjoyed some swimming, boating, and jet skiing on Lake Poinsett! Here's to an exciting year ahead!

This past weekend, President Ryan and President-Elect Maggie traveled to Washington, D.C. for the APhA-ASP Student Leadership Institute! They connected with chapter leaders from across the country, explored their CliftonStrengths, and gathered ideas to bring back to campus. While in D.C., they also visited APhA headquarters, the Natural History Museum, and the White House. They are excited to share everything they learned with our members and can’t wait to see what our chapter accomplishes in the year to come!

Last week Jake Miller, an incoming P3 student pharmacist in SCAPP, traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend the APhA’s Institute on Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Read more about the experience from Jake himself:

“Last week I was humbled to receive a grant through the SDSU College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions to attend the APhA SUD conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. During my four packed days I learned about the pharmacology, neurological bias, and stigmas surrounding substance use disorders. This was by far the most personal and emotional conference I have ever attended as a portion of each day was reserved for AA/NA style meetings. Learning from the pharmacist, interns, and technicians about their SUD story and road to sobriety can at a minimum be described as eye-opening. Almost everyone in their life know someone struggling with SUD and it is our job as clinical staff and community members to encourage safe, personalized, and effective treatments for those with SUDs and to treat the disease while honoring the autonomy of the person struggling to survive.

Thank you to everyone at the SDSU COP AHP and those I met in Utah for an amazing experience I will never forget and for the opportunity to grow and become a better student pharmacist and person.”
