🌿 Comfrey: The Herbal Controversy 🌿
I’ve been seeing comfrey pop up in teas, tinctures, and online “miracle remedies,” and I want to address something important: COMFREY is NOT safe to ingest internally.
While comfrey is amazing topically—think bruises, sprains, cuts, and skin healing—its internal use carries serious risks. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which can cause liver damage, toxicity, and even long-term health issues if ingested.
⚠️ A note about deep wounds: Comfrey is excellent for superficial skin healing, but it should not be used on deep, open, or infected wounds. Its strong healing properties may trap infection under the skin, which can worsen healing instead of helping.
I DO NOT promote drinking comfrey tea or taking it internally, because your safety comes first. It’s one of those herbs where external use is powerful, but internal use is dangerous.
✅ Safe use:
• Comfrey salves on minor cuts, scrapes, bruises, sprains
• Poultices or compresses for surface injuries
❌ Unsafe use:
• Drinking comfrey tea
• Internal tinctures or capsules
• Deep wounds
Herbal medicine is beautiful, but knowledge and caution are key. Just because an herb is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s harmless internally—or in all topical situations.
💚 Use comfrey wisely, honor its healing power on the skin, and as always prioritize safety. Do your own research and take your health seriously. There are a lot of overnight popup TikTok herbalist these days and they all don’t know what they are doing!
