As a busy postpartum doula my time is taken up with clients both day and night! It’s important for me to focus on my recovery sleep and FITNESS in between client visits!

The early days and nights with clients just home from the hospital are a time for recovery and adjustment for the family. It’s not always easy. It’s not always calm. It’s not always without a bit of drama. That’s where I come in!!! As a postpartum doula I’m there to help with the recovery. To help with the adjustments. To partner along side these new parents with any drama that unfolds. Think of me as the calm in the midst of a storm. Because even when everything goes well, and it often does there is still a lot to handle. I love being a part of the journey with these families… my clients. What a blessing.

It’s ok if daytime visits are quiet. As postpartum doulas we don’t have to be busy all the time! I recognize that there is just so much education around newborn care, sleep and feeding baby. At some point families are settling in and finding success in their new normal and things are running smoothly. That’s great and to be expected. So then I offer the opportunity for parents to take time for themselves as well as for one another. Contracts come to an end and hopefully by that time most questions have been answered, new techniques have been mastered and families are ready to fly solo.

Clients often ask “what’s next?” or “now what?” when contracts are coming to an end.
In my final visits, we address next steps and what to expect with their baby…
•feeding
•sleeping
•nanny vs daycare
•how to prepare for parents returning to the workforce
•the importance of continuing to schedule “date moments” into busy schedules
And any additional questions that my clients might have.
One thing I always assure my clients is that they have continued access to me well beyond the contract! We can text, email or schedule a phone consult any time. Just because our contract ends it does not mean our relationship ceases to exist. I urge all my families to continue to reach out with questions, ask for referrals and tap into my wealth of knowledge around sleep and babies.
And of course, if they decide to grow their family I always recommend emailing me the moment the stick turns blue…

I turn 65 today!
I know everyone always says “age is just a number” but age is relative. This is the oldest I’ve ever been. I’m beginning to notice my age a bit more these days. Small aches and pains that all of a sudden appear. (Especially after my daily workouts and walks) Dark spots on my skin, but then I remind myself this is just like my mother’s skin. (And I loved my mother deeply, even with her dark spots) More gray hairs. Changes that I notice when I look in the mirror or get up in the mornings. I have to admit it, that sometimes I feel a little worse about myself. And then I stop, and ask myself the important question… Why would looking and feeling my age make me feel bad??? While it’s hard to accept the aging process, I’m actively resisting the unrealistic pressure on woman not to get older. Getting older feels scary to me. It’s hard to see my life passing by. But I don’t want to confuse my fear of life moving too quickly with my appearance or physical aches and pains. I can’t stop time! And I am who I am. I am both grateful and thankful for my 65 years. And no one should dictate to woman how we should look or feel!!! I’m good with 65! As my mother use the say… “It’s better than the alternative”.

When preparing something to eat for my postpartum mothers it’s about quick and easy while also considering taste! This is always a winner for any time of the day/evening.

It’s a messy day during this winter snowstorm, but the roads are clear for passage, and that’s the good news for this postpartum doula. There are still new mamas to support and families who are looking forward to my visit. And for that, I am forever blessed.
