Social group sessions are 30-minute group appointments held within our clinic conducted by several pediatric speech-language pathologists with one or more peers who are likely working on similar or even complementary skills. The purpose of our therapeutic social skills groups is to prompt, scaffold, and clinically support use of appropriate social skills with other children while engaging in cooperative, collaborative, and interactive activities.
Children enrolled in group sessions are paired with a therapist 1:1, within the group setting to provide skillful support to a child’s participation.
For example, a group of children may engage in weekly “chats” or game playing with support for topic maintenance, social referencing, commenting, asking questions, problem solving, or coping with losing a game.
We typically recommend simultaneous enrollment in individual speech therapy sessions to intensively and directly target social skills that will facilitate better group participation.
