We were delighted to have Boston Rob have his interest piqued into Ayurveda enough for him to come in and film a Shirodhara session for his upcoming TV travel series!

Shirodhara, "Shiro" meaning 'head & 'Dhara' meaning flow, consists of a gentle pouring of oil, milk, buttermilk, or water over the head. It can be combined with a body or head massage. Shirodhara is said to have relaxing, soothing, and calming effects on the body and mind. Research suggests that Shirodhara may help improve sleep quality and reduce stress.

A Shirodhara treatment at our clinic requires an Initial Consultation with one of our Ayurvedic professionals. Get in touch with us to start incorporating Ayurveda into your life! Link in bio to connect.

In India there are six seasons, so ancient Ayurvedic texts speak to the six, but you can apply these principles to the four seasons we experience here in the West, depending on where you live, regardless of the actual fluctuations in temperature.

Pitta Dosha 🔥
Consisting of the fire and water elements, take control in the summer bringing heat and intensity. The hot, humid weather feels penetrating and the sharp qualities bring intense weather events such as thunderstorms and hurricanes.

Vata Dosha 🌬
Consisting of the air and ether elements, increase in quantity through the fall and beginning of winter, drying the leaves and bringing a cool, crisp breeze. The snowfall at the beginning of winter tends to be more dry and light, matching qualities of Vata.

Kapha Dosha 🌎
Consisting of the earth and water elements, steps in to bring density and stability. Here the water element is solid snow and ice, adding sustenance to Earth to set the stage for Spring, the time of growth and blooming.

As someone with more Vata in my natural constitution, I love the summer heat and humidity! What season do you thrive in? ✨

2. 8 oz. Pomegranate juice

Removed the skin from the aloe and add the jelly flesh to a blender with the pomegranate juice. Blend until you achieve a uniform consistency.

Learning to balance the qualities of the Pitta season (hot, sharp, light, mobile) is important to maintain balance throughout the rest of the year. Simple recipes like this are shared in our Personalized Ayurveda Immersion, 40 Days to Personal Transformation, and our Ayurveda Health Counselor programs.

Summer — the season of berries 🍓

You may already be seeing strawberries, raspberries, and cherries making an appearance at your local farmer's market. As Ayurveda speaks to eating with the seasons, the foods you see at the farmer's markets are the best to choose for nourishment. Where you live and what food grows from that land, is considered a gold-standard choice. It didn't have to travel far to make it to your mouth so there is the most available Prana, life force energy.

Fruits are best digested by themselves, first thing in the morning, without any heavier food items like dairy or wheat. Their light and liquid qualities don't mix well in the digestive system with the heavy and dense qualities of dairy and wheat. Choose more sweet and avoid sour fruits in the summer to help balance the Pitta Dosha.

🧊 Is iced water bad for you?

During a hot, summer day it often feels like the only way to feel truly refreshed is with a large glass of ice-cold water.

If you think about a pot of boiling water on a stove, and you add a cup of cold water, the stove has to work again to bring the water back to a boil. It's the same concept with your Agni, our digestive fire. Our digestive system has to heat up the water, to bring it to like-qualities with the body. This requires energy.

During the times the Ayurvedic texts were being written, there was not access to ice like we have now. The texts speak to drinking hot water upon waking, sipping hot water during and after a meal, but what about iced water?

Many Ayurvedies will say no to iced water. But this recommendation is often met with resistance with clients. Our practitioners say it is okay to balance the hot qualities of being outside on a hot day, but to time it properly with your next meal. Ice cold water should not be consumed at the same time as a meal.

So next time you're at a restaurant, request water with no ice, or hot water with your meal but remember it is okay to cool off with ice water after a summer day.

Wake up earlier and feel more awake? Rising with the sun keeps you in tune with your circadian rhythm and the rhythms of nature.

Different periods of the day are influenced by different qualities in nature. If you saw our Ayurveda Clock post, you know that 6am-10am and 6pm-10pm are influenced by Kapha qualities of steady, stable & sturdy and at the same time density, dullness and stickiness.

Waking between the junction of Vata and Kapha (5-7 am) is the ideal time for removal of the waste products. Sleeping after the sun rises, Kapha continues to build and backs up in the digestive tract. These changes lead to sluggishness of body and senses and make it much more difficult for bodily waste to be removed and leads to stagnation.

Our bodies bring a lot to the surface when we sleep to be excreted upon waking. Scraping your tongue, having a bowel movement, showering, and applying oil to the nose and ears are all a part of the Ayurvedic morning routine to properly remove bodily wastes.

Join our 6am yoga class at to combat Kapha & kick start your day light and energized ⚡️

Unlike Prana in which we can readily receive through our breath, Ojas takes time to cultivate. We are born with a natural store of Ojas. Babies are tiny beings of Ojas which helps them grow, build immunity, and survive in the natural world. But as we go about life and we overcome illnesses and stressful periods, our Ojas stores can get depleted when there is not proper refilling.

Our recent blog post shares signs of depleted Ojas, what you can do to build Ojas, and a delicious dessert recipe that will satisfy and nourish your Ojas stores. Find it via our link in bio.

Tejas is the energy of illumination and cellular intelligence, the subtle energy of fire - the brightness of the eyes, the luster of skin and hair, the gleam of white wisdom hair.

Tejas burning too sharp or too dull can cause imbalance in the body, and turns into heat and inflammation. By implementing the cooling strategies of Ayurveda, Tejas evolves into light, illuminating the dark like a flashlight, diffusing heat into powerful energy. Holding tension and stress in a calm, cool way is Tejas in balance.

Words have power. Their power arises from our emotional responses when we read, speak, or hear them. Just say the word “fire” while barbequing, or in the workplace, or in a crowded theater, and you’ll get three completely different but powerful emotional and energetic reactions.

Health messages about a healthy diet can sometimes stigmatize negative reactions. Has the word "diet" lost its deeper meaning: "to nourish"?

Disordered choices to restrict food and other behaviors can be detrimental to an individual's health. However, Ayurvedic Health Counseling, nourishment, and lifestyle choices are routinely recommended.

Our free lecture discussing the deeper meaning of nourishment is happening next Thursday. Join our School Director Kim Valeri Povey, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist, to learn how Ayurvedic principles inform you on how to make choices that support the nourishment of your mind and body. ✨ Prana is the subtle essence of the space element. The flow of consciousness that governs all higher cerebral functions of the mind, memory, thoughts and emotions. Its function in the heart governs the circulation of blood and the supply of oxygen to the vital organs and tissues.

Misdirected Prana leads to Vata problems such as anxiety, hyperactivity, repeated yawning, insomnia, etc.

The breath is the direct connection to our Pranic essence. Pranayama and awareness on the breath helps to regulate Prana so that our body is filled with properly directed life force energy.

At our new location at 505 Tremont St in the South End, join Kim Valeri Povey, Ayurvedic Practitioner and Ayurvedic Yoga Therapist (in person or livestream) to learn more about the subtle vital essences of the body. This workshop includes a restorative yoga practice with pratyahara, pranayama, and meditation to realign your Prana. Link in bio to secure your spot.

Stagnation in the body is one cause of disease. Dry brushing, or Garshana (raw silk brushing), helps to promote circulation through the body, stimulating our lymphatic system to maintain immunity, from the external to the internal.

Moving in circular motions around the joints promotes lubrication. Using fast, short, linear swipes up the extremities stimulates blood, lymph, and prana flow throughout the body.

This practice can be too rough for a vata-dominant person but is excellent for kapha types.

You work 1:1 with your Rogis but are also assigned a mentor to help you determine the path of healing for each individual person. This style helps you gain confidence on your ability to problem-solve while also making sure you are giving accurate Ayurvedic suggestions.

It's not too late to join our Spring 2022 cohort starting May 20th. This is the last chance to receive your training 100% virtually through our NAMA recognized program! Get in touch via the link in our bio.

Pungent • Bitter • Astringent
🧄🥦🍏
the three of the six tastes to emphasize during spring season as they help balance the kapha dosha.

🥬Leafy greens are both bitter and astringent. Sautéing them in ghee or coconut oil before adding them to your dish helps with digestibility.

🌶Enjoy adding pungent spices such as ginger, pepper or cumin and you get all three kapha pacifying tastes in your meals!

Would you like to learn more about nourishment that aligns to your dosha? After an initial consultation with one of our practitioners, our Diet for Dosha wellness service is catered to guiding you to adapt your approach to food based on your unique constitution.
