July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, also known as BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month. The month is dedicated to recognizing the unique mental health challenges faced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. It was formally recognized by Congress in 2008 and is named after Bebe Moore Campbell, a journalist, teacher, author, and national mental health advocate.
BIPOC communities face complex barriers to receiving mental health care, including systemic racism, economic, geographic, and linguistic factors. For example, 43% of Black people and 47% of Hispanic people in the U.S. try to manage mental health issues on their own instead of seeing a therapist, compared to 35% of white people.
Some things that can help include:
Seeking treatment from a provider who looks like you and has similar life experiences
Encouraging more people in BIPOC communities to enter the mental health field
Making it okay for members of the BIPOC community to seek out support

June is men's mental health month but often the general narrative does not support men being vulnerable as it's seen as a sign of weakness. So they are taught and told to "man up", thus when they are experiencing signs and symptoms of mental health issues they often mask it.

31% of men experience depression in their lifetime, but only 25% speak to a mental health professional. Men are less likely to talk about their feelings or seek treatment.

Please let's change the narrative one voice at a time #
