SEWA-AIFW is a nonprofit 501c3 organization committed to bringing total family wellness to the South Asian Indian community in the Twin Cities.

Formed in 2004, SEWA-AIFW is a non-governmental, nonprofit 501c3 organization committed to bringing total family wellness to the South Asian Indian community and serving the vulnerable among this group. The South Asian population is the second largest Asian group in Minnesota, with an estimated population of 82,000+ (of which 52,000+ are of Indian descent) and includes those from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, as well as those of South Asian descent from Trinidad, Guyana, and other Caribbean nations.

SEWA was honored to address the Minnesota Senate Committee on Jobs and Economic Development on Monday, March 16. Our CEO Anjuli Mishra Cameron was able to share the important workforce development programs that SEWA has led, providing financial stability support to over 100 South Asian families in 2025. Thank you to Senator Susan Pha for carrying this critical legislation to support our communities at a time when families are struggling with affordability and job security. We are deeply grateful to Sen. Bobby Joe Champion and the members the Committee for hearing the bill and their continued work to support the economic outlook of Minnesotans.

Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and many families spend time near water—at lakes, pools, and beaches. In many immigrant families, adults may not have learned how to swim or may not feel confident teaching their children water safety. This class creates a supportive space where parents and children can learn simple, lifesaving water safety skills together. Learning as a family builds confidence and helps keep our children safe while enjoying Minnesota’s waters.

We are proud to celebrate our very own Dasharath Yata on receiving the “Champion of Community Wellness Award” at the Telugu Association of Minnesota’s Ugadi Festival on March 21, held at Jefferson School. This well-deserved recognition reflects not only his leadership, but also the impactful work of SEWA-AIFW in serving and uplifting the South Asian community. Led by Niloufer Merchant, Ed.D., L.P., this interactive gathering will invite South Asian women to explore how everyday traditions like sharing chai, conversation, music, rhythm, and gentle movement can help calm the nervous system and strengthen connection. Together, we’ll celebrate these meaningful practices as sources of grounding, safety, and wellbeing.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Rep. Kelly Morrison for recently hosting a community roundtable for SEWA-AIFW, which also joined by India Association of Minnesota for a meaningful and timely discussion centered on the recent impacts of immigration on our community members. This conversation created space to uplift lived experiences, address pressing challenges, and explore ways we can collectively advocate for and support those most affected.
