Hello everyone. I wanted to share some insights about restoring thyroid hormone balance naturally.
The thyroid gland is crucial in regulating many body processes, especially those related to metabolic function. Maintaining optimal thyroid function and balanced levels of its main hormones, T3 and T4, is vital for overall health.
However, thyroid hormone dysfunction is very common, often unrecognized for years. It most commonly results from the autoimmune condition Hashimoto's, which causes fluctuations in thyroid hormone levels that ultimately end up low or in the hypothyroid state due to prolonged thyroid tissue destruction.
Hypothyroidism is estimated to affect approximately 10% of adults in the US, with a potentially higher prevalence in older populations. Of that, 10%, 90%, or 9 of every 10 people with hypothyroidism, is caused by the autoimmune condition Hashimoto's Disease.
The functional medicine approach can help restore thyroid hormone balance and promote thyroid health by understanding and addressing the root causes of imbalance.
These can include exposure to endocrine disruptors, stress, and chronic inflammation.
Nutrition, gut health, and liver function also play a significant role in balancing thyroid hormones. Adequate intake of micronutrients such as iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc is crucial for thyroid hormone synthesis and conversion.
Be cautious with iodine. If you have Hashimoto's, iodine may inflame the autoimmune process.
Also, maintaining gut health and balanced gut bacteria can benefit systemic processes, including thyroid and immune function.
The thyroid-liver axis, or connection, also illustrates the system-wide impact of thyroid health.
Remember, you must look at more than your thyroid hormone levels to get the best health possible.
Health really is wealth.
Take care of your thyroid, and it will take care of you.
