POOL

I’ve had latest album DAROLD on repeat and it had me thinking a lot about masculinity, trauma, and depression. Particularly, the song “Pool” highlighting the childhood wounds that we carry into adulthood and the strength and vulnerability it takes to speak our truths on the journey of self-healing.

HUMBLE

I think the word humble gets a bad rap. When we hear be humble, It is often used as an insult to suggest that one’s ego has gotten too big and as a result, one’s significance and sense of importance needs to be lowered.

But when I think of being humble, I think of the act of bowing. The act of bowing allows one to shift their gaze through movement and pay respect to significance and importance that lies outside of themselves. Rather than lowering our ego, we are stepping outside of our ego to shift our perspective.

URGENCY

There is always time to take a deep breath.

Oftentimes, we can feel like we constantly have to be on the grind with an ever growing to do list. It can be hard to distinguish between what is urgent vs. what is important.

When I am feeling overwhelmed with tasks and responsibilities, I like to take a deep breath and ask myself what would change about my day or week if I did not get this task done right now. This question gives me a more accurate picture of how critical things are and oftentimes, these tasks are not as urgent as they appear to be.

“If one really wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the policemen, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the unprotected – those, precisely, who need the law’s protection most! – and listens to their testimony.”

SAFETY

Many of us have been feeling unsafe in the US for a very long time. But with the recent elections, I imagine there is a lot of anticipatory anxiety about the violent actions and policies to come. I wish I could think of something reassuring to say, but anxiety and fear are definitely understandable reactions.

However, what did come to my mind was the importance of engaging in practices that make us feel safer and more present with our bodies. It makes sense to want to disconnect and disassociate, but we can benefit from finding ways to be embodied. The more we connect with ourselves, the clearer our mind and the more inner power we can tap into to plan our acts of resistance.

TRAUMA. LOSS. GRIEF.

As I take differing variations of trikonasana (triangle pose), I am reminded that there is no end date on healing.

How you heal and the ways you cope will shift and change based on things like triggers, needs and wants, and how you’ve grown and developed with your recovery.

BALANCE.

I wanted this post to be about finding the balance between individually holding space for clients with collective trauma and grief while acknowledging oppressive forces and the need for global-level solutions. But when I think about the widespread violence and genocides happening around the world and a recent audiobook that I listened to on ethnic cleansing, my words felt hollow.

Rather than the word balance, the only thought that came to mind was the quote, “the personal is political.” And when it comes to therapeutic work and collective trauma, I feel like I’m trying to figure out how best to serve my clients, week by week, day by day, and moment by moment.

And maybe the balance I seek in this work is fleeting. For now. Because it needs to be.

SELF-LOVE

Complex trauma can affect your sense of self-worth and value in relationships. For example, you may have thoughts that you are somehow broken or that you can never be fully vulnerable with others without being taken advantage of.

Cultivating a consistent self-love practice can help with building esteem in yourself and others. Self-love practices are actions that are rooted in appreciating yourself, honoring and respecting your whole being, holding space for your emotions, and making yourself feel cared for.

Examples of self-love practices are:

Doing nice things for yourself
Connecting with nature
Receiving compliments without deflecting them
Creating self-affirmations
Engaging in gentle, mindful movement
Spending time with supportive and caring people
