Urban Asanas

Urban Asanas The Breath + Beats of the street. The first Black-owned yoga studio in Crown Heights, Brooklyn!

Jyll Hubbard-Salk decided to open Urban Asanas in her neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn as a space for people of all walks and backgrounds to practice yoga together. Over the last 6 years, Urban Asanas has cultivated a diverse and growing community, offering many styles of yoga and workshops to practitioners at all levels. In 2017, Jyll moved the studio to the corner of the same block on Nostrand Avenue at Sterling Place, expanding into a larger, beautiful featuring bamboo floors and lots of natural light. Urban Asanas continues to focus on building community and making yoga fun and accessible to all. The studio offers multiple donation based classes every week, free yoga mat rentals and discounted rates for seniors and high school students. We want to honor and acknowledge Black women and the risks they too often face when it comes to healthcare. This isn’t just a BHM conversation, it’s a year-round truth. Last month, Dr. Janelle Green-Smith died shortly after giving birth to her first child. She was a steward of fighting racism in healthcare.

As the women who have carried communities, nurtured families, and held the world on our backs throughout history, our health matters. Our safety, our care, our advocacy, and our rest…ALL of it is essential.

We see you. We honor you. And we’re committed to holding space for your well-being. 🖤✨

No matter who you’re loving on this month, remember you’re always your first home. ❤️‍🔥

There are countless ways to pour into yourself, but start here: be kind and be patient, especially on the days when nothing seems to land quite right. Offer yourself the grace you so easily give to others.

And take a moment to thank your body for carrying you, for breathing for you, for simply functioning even when you’re tired, overwhelmed, or unsure.

Even in this weary winter, your light is still yours. Tap into your self-love. Choose peace. Choose kindness. Don’t let your own inner dialogue trip you up or dim what’s already glowing within you. ✨

It’s a trying time, yes BUT you can and will get through it.
Please, love on yourself today. Give yourself the grace, the warmth, the softness you so freely give to others.

We’re right here with you.

Today we honor Yemayá, Mother of the Waters, guide, protector, and reminder that healing often comes in waves.

Across the diaspora, Yemayá is celebrated twice a year, each observance a moment to return to the shore of gratitude, devotion, and renewal. However you connect with her energy today, may you feel held, cleansed, and carried forward with compassion.

May her waters move through our week with ease.

New week, new month, new chance to tune your frequency. Not to hustle harder, but to listen deeper. What’s one thing your body is asking for today? Start there. We’ll meet you on the mat when you’re ready. In whatever you do this week remember: Show up as you are, move how you can, and let the world meet you halfway.

There’s something beautiful about Super Soul Sunday starting BHM!! Black History Month invites us to honor the brilliance, resilience, and legacy that lives in our bodies every day. For 100 years we’ve collectively celebrated this month, a century of remembering, uplifting, and reclaiming our stories.

We gather, we breathe, we move NOT just to remember the past, but to nurture the future we’re building together. ✨🖤

The work continues. ✊🏾
Dismantling—whether it’s old systems, old stories, or the patterns we’ve outgrown CANNOT be done in a day. It’s a practice. A breath-by-breath commitment.

As individuals, we confront what needs shifting within ourselves. As a collective, we move in solidarity toward something more just, more liberating, more aligned.

On and off the mat, we keep choosing the work. We keep choosing each other.

We stand in solidarity with the national shutdown and closure of businesses taking a collective pause in protest of ongoing
ICE actions and violence.

We join our voices with those across the country calling for justice for Keith Porter Jr, Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and all those brutally detaine and harmed.

While we are a communal space for gathering and healing, tomorrow the studio will not open and we encourage our community to take their action off the mat. Join in meaningful resistance, show up for justice, and make your voice heard beyond the studio doors.

Be safe, don’t judge, and remember that every action matters no matter how big or small! 🧊🚫

It’s a heavy time right now: collectively, personally, spiritually. And while there’s a long list of things we can do, we cannot stress enough the importance of becoming who you are meant to be. Each of us carries a gift that this world DESPERATELY needs.

The light inside you, even when dimmed by a storm, holds an immeasurable power. You might be moving through something tender, confusing, or overwhelming, but please keep going and growing.

Because when you heal, you don’t just shift your own life… you become a mirror, a guide, a soft landing for someone else stepping into their healing too. We may not all possess the same gifts as Ms. Shirley, but we all possess the potential to care. Love y’all!!

Whew!! Sometimes we try to heal in the same place (internally or externally) that broke us down. But you don’t have to return to the mindsets, the habits, or the environments that made you sick.

As the storm passes and life asks you to pick up the pace again, move slowly. Move with intention. Let yourself ease back into the world without rushing the restoration. Healing isn’t about going back…it’s about moving forward differently.

Classes are back on!! ✨

The breath + beats of the street.

Jyll Hubbard-Salk decided to open Urban Asanas in her neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn as a space for people of all walks of life and backgrounds to come together, practice yoga and breathe.

Since 2012, Urban Asanas has cultivated a diverse and growing community, offering many styles of yoga and workshops to practitioners of all levels. In 2017, Jyll moved the studio three doors down to the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Place, expanding into a larger, beautiful space featuring bamboo floors and lots of natural light.

Urban Asanas continues to focus on building community and making yoga fun and accessible to all. The studio offers multiple donation based classes every week, free yoga mat rentals and discounted rates for seniors and high school students. Classes range from high intensity Power with a focus on alignment and building strength to 60 minute donation based Community classes offering a Vinyasa flow. Also on our weekly schedule are prenatal yoga and restorative, slow moving Yin classes. In addition, we organize monthly workshops bringing different forms of wellness, yoga and self care to our community.

Whether you are a seasoned yogi or have never tried yoga before, the doors of Urban Asanas are open and we look forward to meeting you.
