Heartshare champions and empowers New York City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health and well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures. Heartshare exists to remove obstacles, build stability, and allow for greater self-belief, self-advocacy, and independence. We support two specific populations across all of New York City: children and adults with developmental disabilities; and children and families dealing with the trauma associated with family separation. Each population faces its own distinct set of challenges and obstacles — and we are set up accordingly to meet them with understanding, evidence-based solutions, and interconnected programming.

We had an egg-cellent time at the Marlboro Cornerstone Program’s special Easter Celebration! 🐣✨ Families came together for a day filled with fun, laughter, and community spirit. Thank you to Heartshare Board Member TJ McManus and his firm, Sullivan Papain Block McManus Coffinas & Cannavo P.C., for making this event possible; to former Jets players Bobby Jackson and Rob Carpenter for volunteering; and to ABC 7 for helping us shine a light on the year-round, high-quality programming we offer in Brooklyn. From academic support and career readiness to arts, sports, and leadership development, we’re proud to provide a safe, supportive space for growth and connection. Here’s to building stronger communities—together!

At Heartshare, we know that students with disabilities thrive when families are truly engaged.

Family collaboration isn’t just important—it’s essential. Through open communication and active involvement, we create consistency across home and school, helping every student reach their potential. When families partner with us to establish routines and build tailored instruction approaches for every student's unique learning needs, together we foster a supportive, enriching environment where every child can shine. 💙

In 1982, Heartshare opened two First Step Early Childhood Centers, one in Brooklyn and one in Queens, providing vital early intervention for children ages 2 to 5 with autism and other developmental disabilities. During a time when many people with developmental disabilities were excluded from the conversation, Heartshare stepped up to remove obstacles and build stability.

These centers pioneered structured learning environments in New York City and empowered students to better navigate social situations, increasing their independence and setting them up for long-term success. Recognizing the importance of early intervention and structured learning environments, Heartshare is proud to have taken concrete steps to empower students at a crucial and transformative time in their lives.💙

On the inaugural episode of PIX11's new digital series, "Monica Makes It Happen" with Monica Morales, Heartshare 2024 Youth of the Year Jaelen Padilla shared how prioritizing his mental health supported his journey—from his time in foster care to his current studies in computer engineering at Johnson & Wales University.

We extend a special thank you to ACS for their partnership on Soul Care, an initiative to ensure that all young people in foster care can, like Jaelen, access culturally responsive, long-term mental health services.

People with developmental disabilities have always been part of Heartshare's communities — and always will be. Each year, we are proud to provide services and support to transform the lives of over 2,500 New York City children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

This Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we’re sharing stories from our communities that connect past, present, and future because at Heartshare, when a commitment is made — whether to a new pre-schooler, or an adult coming to live in one of our residences — it’s a commitment for life. 💙

Team Heartshare hit the road to New York’s capital this month, meeting with elected officials and making our voices heard on the issues that matter most to the intellectual and developmental disability community.

Our self-advocates and Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) were at the table to speak about their lived experience—what chronic underfunding means day to day, how staffing shortages impact care, and why stability matters.

We shared our hope that lawmakers and the Governor will come together to support a 2.7% inflationary increase for DSPs and other disability providers—an investment that truly meets the needs of our community and the people who care for them.

Together, we can achieve funding that ensures every New Yorker can access the support, services, and opportunities they need to thrive. 💙

In honor of Black History Month, the Heartshare St. Vincent’s Youth Development Team hosted a special event for our American Dream Scholars to experience firsthand the rich history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Fraternities, and Sororities, while also inspiring our scholars to pursue higher education.

One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by Heartshare’s Community Program, Surfside Cornerstone, which paid tribute to the culture, legacy, and strength of those who came before. Heartshare Community programs are year-round programs for both young people and adults in Brooklyn, providing a safe and supportive space for education, recreation, and personal growth.

Thank you to everyone from our community who came out and made the night so memorable!

Meet Noah, a talented student at The Heartshare School, our K-12 school in Brooklyn for children with developmental disabilities. Noah is not only an active member of the student-run jewelry business Ash & Co., but also part of the newly formed student-run print company Heartshare Designs.

Noah developed his love of music thanks to his grandfather, but after his grandfather’s passing, Noah put down his guitar. It wasn’t until Mr. Lloyd from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music began teaching at The Heartshare School that Noah picked up the guitar again and rediscovered his passion for playing. Noah’s favorite band is U2, and he hopes to continue growing as a guitarist with Mr. Lloyd by his side.

Last week, Heartshare celebrated Valentine’s Day all across the agency, filling each day with special activities and plenty of love. Some of the festivities included cookie decorating and arts and crafts at our group residences for adults ages 21 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our special education preschools also joined the fun with heart-themed celebrations in their classrooms, and students from our Heartshare School held a Valentine’s Day sale for their jewelry business, Ash & Co. The week was filled with so many fun moments and, of course, plenty of heart! 💙
