Heartshare Human Services of New York

Heartshare Human Services of New York We champion and empower the City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health & well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures.

Heartshare champions and empowers New York City’s most overlooked and underestimated by promoting health and well-being, creating stability, and unlocking futures. Heartshare exists to remove obstacles, build stability, and allow for greater self-belief, self-advocacy, and independence. We support two specific populations across all of New York City: children and adults with developmental disabili

ties; and children and families dealing with the trauma associated with family separation. Each population faces its own distinct set of challenges and obstacles — and we are set up accordingly to meet them with understanding, evidence-based solutions, and interconnected programming.

In May, we celebrated the 🎨 15th Annual Artshare exhibit at Clover’s Gallery — and the energy in the room was unforgettable.

The show featured original work by artists from across Heartshare programs, highlighting the power of creativity and self-expression in disability services.

💛 We’re so grateful to the artists, teaching staff, and program teams who made it all possible.

📸 Take a look at some moments from the event — and if you missed it, there’s still time to catch Artshare at The Red Wall Art Gallery at Resorts World Casino, Queens. The exhibit is open through August 18!

We’ve got a brand-new look—logo, colors, and a website to match!

But don’t worry: our mission hasn’t changed. We’re still here, amplifying voices, creating access, and building pathways forward.

Two historic bills. One powerful youth movement.

We’re proud to celebrate the incredible advocacy of our HeartShare St. Vincent's Services youth, who helped pass two major pieces of legislation within the NYC Council this month—both aimed at improving the foster care system for young people across the city.

💼 One bill ensures youth in foster care are provided with appropriate luggage during transitions—affirming their dignity and humanity.
📊 The second mandates transparent, disaggregated data on foster youth placements to improve services and oversight.

These wins are a testament to the power of youth voice. Our young advocates continue to speak up—not only for themselves, but for countless others who will follow.

Inclusive interactions don’t have to be complicated—but they do require awareness and respect.

DO:
✅ Ask before offering help
✅ Use person-first language (e.g., “a person who uses a wheelchair”)
✅ Give people space and time to speak for themselves
DON’T:
🚫 Assume someone’s needs or limitations
🚫 Speak to a companion instead of directly to the person
🚫 Use dismissive language like “sweetie” or “suffering from...”

Respect is the foundation of inclusion.

Meet Jaelen, our 2024 St. Vincent’s Family Services Youth of the Year.
From the classroom to the stage at our annual Benefit, Jaelen embodies the strength, resilience, and vision of the youth in our American Dream Program.

“I have my plan. I continue to collect homes. I continue to create new goals. I have love. I’m looking forward. The future is mine. I hope that everyone who has pushed me over the past few years also feels that they have achieved this goal. You are my home. Thank you.” – Jaelen

We know that education is more than academics—it’s a foundation for healing, growth, and hope.

Jaelen was honored at our 2024 Benefit. We’re already looking ahead to this year:

Disability is complex. It’s physical, emotional, sensory, cognitive—and deeply human. This Disability Pride Month, we’re highlighting the full spectrum of experiences, using the Disability Pride Flag as a guide:

🔴 Physical disabilities
🟡 Neurodivergence
⚪️ Invisible/undiagnosed
🔵 Emotional + psychiatric
🟢 Sensory disabilities
⚫️ Resistance to discrimination and loss

Everyone deserves to be seen—and celebrated.

With the growing need for special education services in NYC, we knew we had to act. This year, Heartshare doubled down by hiring more staff, increasing student enrollment, and reaching 99% capacity across our schools!

Every child deserves access to quality education. 💙

Over the past year, we’ve taken time to reflect on what truly defines the way we work at Heartshare.

When our services are doing what they’re meant to—when they’re changing lives—you’ll always see these three things in action:

1️⃣ We amplify access and voice for those too often overlooked
2️⃣ We adapt to unmet needs and fill critical gaps
3️⃣ We build pathways forward—so people can create their own futures

These values aren’t new—but the way we talk about them is.

A huge thank you to the amazing New York Liberty and Allie Moogan for giving participants from our Respite program and youth in foster care an unforgettable night!

Thanks to your generosity, our Heartshare family got to experience the joy, energy, and excitement of a professional basketball game—and most importantly, they got to feel included, celebrated, and connected.

We’re so grateful for community partners like the NY Liberty who understand how powerful these moments can be. 🏀💙
