Dr. John Sarno spent decades as head of NYU’s School of Rehabilitative Medicine studying one surprising pattern:

Many people with severe chronic pain had nothing structurally wrong with them.

His conclusion:

Repressed emotions, chronic tension, and stress keep the nervous system in protection mode.

And protection mode creates real physical pain.

This explains why symptoms often:

Move from neck to back to hip
Flare during stress
Disappear on vacation
Return during pressure
Come and go at random times

He called this condition TMS (Tension Myoneural Syndrome).

And his discovery has helped heal thousands.

Howard Stern.
Larry David.
Anne Bancroft.
Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black director.)

And many regular people like me.

I went from lying on the couch in a neck brace…

to training for my second marathon.

My final thought:

If your pain doesn’t follow a clear structural pattern…

your nervous system may be the real driver.

And when the system feels safe again,

the pain often loses its reason to stay.

Comment WHAT?! if you can’t believe it and I’ll send you the video of the congressional hearing where Senator Harkin talks about how he eliminated his chronic pain using this exact approach. ❤️‍🩹.

Avoid conflict.

Stay agreeable.

Don’t upset anyone.

It worked... or did it?

Sort if... until her body started pushing back.

Because conflict avoidance means:
Swallowing frustration

Ignoring resentment

Suppressing needs

Living in constant internal tension

And internal tension doesn’t stay just emotional.

It shows up as:
Chronic neck pain

Jaw tightness

Back pain

Hip pain

Fatigue

Anxiety that won’t turn off

Stomach issues

and plenty more...

My final thought:

Your nervous system can only suppress so much before it starts signaling.

Many chronic symptoms are the body’s way of saying:

“This pressure can’t stay inside anymore.”

(NYU’s Dr. Sarno proved this conclusively with his work there from 1965-2012.)

Healing begins when it’s finally safe to express what you’ve been holding back.

Chronic pain sufferers have a love-hate relationship with the healthcare system.

Why? Because:
-it treats them like garbage
-It makes them feel like a criminal for wanting meds
-it rarely actually helps them
-it’s expensive
(All of which makes them despise it.)

BUT... they refuse to break up with it!

So it’s kind of like one of those toxic relationships that never end.

But some of us... DID break up with it.

For me, it ended when I discovered the work of NYU’s Dr. Sarno.

Dr. Sarno was the head of Rehabilitative Medicine at NYU from 1965 to 2012 and his work connecting chronic pain and conditions to repressed emotions, stress and fear have changed thousands of lives, including my own.

But most people stay with their abusive parter the Healthcare system instead of looking outside it where true help lies.

If you are one the many who have grown tired, you can click the link in my bio and book a call where we’ll go deep into what the work is about and how it relates to YOUR situation.

Healing IS possible. ❤️‍🩹

Note: By “breaking up with the healthcare system,” I mean in regards to getting help with chronic pain and conditions that they have been unable to help you with for years. In my opinion, everyone still needs a primary doctor and to get regular health check-ups.
