Utah Couple Welcomes Quintuplets, Growing Family to Nine
Phoenix, Ariz. — July 31, 2007. What began as a plan to have a third child became a history-making delivery for Rachelle and Jayson Wilkinson, who welcomed quintuplets—three girls and two boys—at a Phoenix hospital. The newborns’ combined weight of 21 lb, 7.2 oz set a U.S. record for quintuplets, according to hospital officials.

The Wilkinsons, already parents to a 7-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, sought fertility care in 2005 after struggling to conceive. Rachelle underwent ovulation-stimulating medication and intrauterine insemination (IUI)—treatments that increase the chance of multiples, though quintuplets remain uncommon.
Doctors discussed selective reduction due to the risks associated with high-order multiples; the couple declined. “Once we saw five babies on the screen—even at 10 weeks, with tiny fingers and toes—there was no choosing,” Rachelle said.
Despite standing 5-foot-2, Rachelle carried the pregnancy to 34 weeks, an exceptional mark for quintuplets. “By the end there was no room for bending or sitting,” she joked. “But when they arrived, every minute was worth it.”
Back in Utah, big brother and sister—initially thrilled—are adjusting to life with five newborns. “They’ve started asking if it’s okay for Mom and Dad to come home,” Jayson laughed, as the family settles into a new routine.
