The gathering recognized the important work CAB members carry out throughout the year to elevate community priorities, support patient centered initiatives, and strengthen the connection between hospitals and the communities they serve.

🎄 Holiday Habits and Your Heart ❤️

The joys (and stressors) of the season may affect your heart without you realizing it. The holidays are often filled with celebration, but one thing many people don’t expect is that this time of year can send blood pressure higher than usual. If that pressure stays too high, it puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk for heart attack and stroke.

The good news is that a few simple changes can help keep your blood pressure steadier all season long.

Why Blood Pressure Rises During the Holidays

• Salty and rich foods can make the body retain fluid, increasing pressure inside the arteries
• Busy schedules and stress release hormones that raise blood pressure
• Less movement, long hours sitting, and disrupted routines
• More alcohol and less sleep
• Missed medications during travel or schedule changes
• Cold weather tightening blood vessels

Healthy Holiday Tips

✔️ Go easy on the salt. Use herbs, citrus and pepper to season food
✔️ Keep moving. Take a quick walk after meals or park farther away from stores
✔️ Find moments to relax. Deep breaths, calming music, quiet time and saying “no” when you need to
✔️ Watch cocktails and caffeine
✔️ Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep when possible
✔️ Set reminders so you don’t miss medications
✔️ Check your blood pressure regularly at home

With awareness and a few positive habits, you can protect your heart and stay healthy while enjoying this special season. 💚✨

Our Story

NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County was founded more than 175 years ago. The hospital we know today has its origins in an institution known as the Almshouse that evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries. The hospital sits on land that was bought from the Martense family for three thousand dollars. In 1837, a hospital building was completed; this building, 86 feet long by 36 feet wide, was the beginning of the present extensive physical plant which has become one of the largest municipal hospitals in the United States.

Through the years, many projects were completed bringing physical growth and improved clinical facilities for patient care and teaching of all types and levels of health workers. The lay Advisory Board, comprising outstanding members of the community, devoted to the activities and welfare of the hospital, was established in May 1951. It has been succeeded by a Community Advisory Board officially installed May 12, 1972, and an active Consumer Council dedicated to the objective of optimum and concerned patient care.

Throughout the growth and development of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, devoted administrative, medical, nursing and hospital staff have generously given of their knowledge, time, and talents. The hospital has claimed many “firsts” in the field of medicine: it was the site of the first open-heart surgery performed in New York State; NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County physicians invented the world’s first hemodialysis machine, conducted the first studies of HIV infection in women and produced the first human images using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County was named the first Level 1 Trauma Center in the U.S.

Hospital Dedication | “Let all who serve here remember that this institution is dedicated to the care of all who are helpless and afflicted. This before all else.”|
