They're almost always necessary to rehabilitate the spine and reduce back pain. The best path is to get tailored and gradual program from a professional who understands your body and the causation of your pain.

The most common mistake and the most typical response to back pain is to take it easy by staying in bed or stopping any strenuous activity for days - sometimes even weeks. Unfortunately, it's counterintuitive but people this can actually undermine healing and worsen the pain.
