One of my favorite questions to answer is: where are my kidneys?! (I’m not kidding when I say this gets asked almost daily). First thing to know is that you actually have two kidneys (not one) and that they’re bean-sized and located on your lower back, sitting just below the rib cage. The next important thing to know is that your kidneys help to filter out your blood, eliminating waste and extra fluid for you to eventually urinate out. But not only does it balance your fluids, but it’s responsible for red blood cell production, maintaining your blood pressure, and keeping your bones strong! So you can imagine the importance of these organs staying nice and healthy. When a patient has kidney disease, it means it can no longer filter the blood correctly and that’s where infections and stones can develop, as well as the possibility of a kidney transplant or dialysis. People with diabetes or hypertension run a higher risk of this happening but the graph shows a general list of possible side effects to kidney issues in case you may be experiencing some unusual symptoms as of late. This is why it’s super important to take care of yourself through nutrition, maintain a healthy weight, and keep yourself hydrated-the goal is not for your body to work harder, only smarter 😉

Blood pressure! I think many patients get confused as to what’s a normal number and what’s diagnosed as high blood pressure or hypertension. First, it’s important to know what this actually is: this is the force of your blood pushing against your arterial walls. Every time your heart beats, blood pumps into these arteries. Your systolic pressure or your high number is when your heart is beating and pumping blood. Your diastolic pressure or your low number is when your heart is resting or in between the beats. Normal numbers are 120/80 (or lower). Elevated BP is between 120-129 with the low number under 80; stage 1 hypertension is between 130/139 and the bottom number is between 80-89; stage 2 hypertension is anything 140 or higher with the bottom number 90 or higher and finally, hypertensive crisis is when the high number is over 180 and the bottom is higher than 120. What does this all mean for health purposes? If your blood pressure is high, it signifies that your heart is working harder than it has to, pumping faster and elevating your risk of heart attack, stroke, or even kidney failure. Medication can help bring these numbers down but you can do your part by keeping a lifestyle that includes a healthy weight, diet, and exercise regimen. It’s also important to stay on top of your doctor visits and if you have a concern about your blood pressure please make sure to contact your healthcare professional asap! Your heart is your engine-make sure you fill it with the right oil and treat it with the respect it deserves.

A topic I don’t like to cover but that’s because I’ve actually suffered from some of these (and still continue a small struggle with one currently). As the saying goes, if you’ve never experienced something, you can’t truly know how it feels to go through that something-and this certainly holds true here. To date, there are actually several different eating disorders but the most common are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, avoidant food disorder, and binge eating. These disorders are serious mental health issues that involve severe thoughts about food and the eating behaviors that come with it. Many people who suffer from anxiety and/or obsessive compulsive disorder seem to possess the ability to be at a higher risk than others but eating disorders do not discriminate. Some signs to look for if you’re concerned for a friend or family member (or even yourself) include fear of eating in public, poor body image, skipping meals, excessive exercising, programmed eating rituals, and the use of laxatives frequently to name a few. If you are concerned for yourself or a loved one, please do not hesitate to contact your healthcare professional or even just someone you feel comfortable speaking with on a daily! But please do so because getting help early can make all the difference ❤️

One of the most common diagnoses with the weakest research ever! As someone who suffers from IBS personally, nothing is more frustrating and embarrassing than having something you can’t really control. In some ways, IBS has dictated certain events and prevented me from doing certain things due to fear that I would have an “episode” and not be able to find a bathroom. All is not lost though-there are certain OTC medications that can help as well as certain foods and drinks you can avoid to help, all as a mindful and preventative approach. The last thing you want to do is be so afraid of IBS that you forget how to live so if you think you may have some, any, or all of these symptoms, please reach out to your healthcare professional for more guidance on how you can live with this because the good news is: YOU CAN.

Bodybuilding and supplements…is it really helping? Studies show that supplements that include zinc, magnesium, nitric oxide, quercetin, L-arginine, glutamine, or choline show no significant evidence that they improve athletic performance. Creatine (the comeback kid) has actually shown some improvement in muscle-building and can aide in the production of amino acids but studies show that long-term use could damage your liver or kidneys. Creatine has also been linked to an increased risk of something called compartment syndrome, a condition where pressure can build up in the muscle compartment and can actually prevent blood flow. Please make sure to have your levels checked often while you’re taking it and once you’ve achieved your desired effect, please consider coming off of it. As with most supplements, they all have a shelf-life on your body and should be taken gently, not abused. Eat right, stay consistent, and let your body do what it needs to do-it won’t let you down!

I’m 42 years old. I’ve been exercising almost my whole life but have become pretty consistent for the last 15 years and I have to tell you: each day is ALWAYS a different story. Some days I’m ready to go, some days, I’m kind of ready to go, and on lots of days, I’m absolutely not ready to go but one thing remains true: no matter what feeling I’m experiencing, I get out there and do what I have to do (unless I’m sick or suffering from an injury 🤪). My fitness is just as important as my diet and the word “health” needs to include both of those. The discipline it takes to commit to both of these isn’t always easy but it’s always fair: you get out what you put in. Every. Single. Time.

But do I really need to track?…honestly? YES! Tracking is still one of the best methods we have to determine how many calories you’re taking in versus putting out. It’s also a great way to see if you’re having too many or too few calories for a weight loss or gain! And don’t be shy about the little snacks or handful of nuts you grazed on earlier in the day-those “little snacks” can sometimes add up to several hundred calories that could make or break your daily caloric intake for the day, causing you to remain stagnant in your weight or prevent a weight loss! While tracking can be mundane and feel like homework, doing so can start to allow you to recognize foods and their calorie contents immediately without even having to check your app at some point. So put in the grunt work now to educate yourself for later!

Phytonutrients!! I get asked all the time what kinds of foods one can consume that can help with inflammation, or provide anti-oxidants, or even control their hormones and the answer all the time is to TASTE THE RAINBOW!! First thing to know is that phytonutrients are a compound made by plants to help them battle disease, pests, and environmental stresses. When a human consumes these plants (AKA that fabulous rainbow of foods pictured), the benefits are outstanding! Cell protection, anti-inflammation, heart health-it’s all in there! Some of these plants are so potent in these compounds that they’re currently being studied by pharmaceutical companies to be replaced by common drugs with these natural plants! Friendly reminder: as with anything, overuse of these nutrients is not recommended; instead try to aim for a plant-rich diet whilst still incorporating all the other important macros!

Dietary supplements…friend or foe? One of my favorite professors in graduate school started his first day of class asking how many people took vitamins or supplements (lots of hands raised) and then told the ones who didn’t have their hands raised to stand up. There weren’t many…he clapped his hands and congratulated those students standing for not falling for the hype!! Most studies show that a majority of the population take supplements and about 85% don’t even need them! The reality is that most people get their vitamins through food and if you’re uncertain, a quick blood test can dictate what levels you might be deficient in and then you can supplement as you see fit. And at that point, the brand of vitamin is just as important as the vitamin itself because if it’s not manufactured correctly, it won’t be absorbed correctly and then it’s completely useless. If you do feel a need to take a vitamin, vitamin D and C are great because most people don’t get enough of either and both help with immune support throughout the year. Omega-3 and iron are also examples of supplements that will always help and that you can’t technically overdo. But really, a “food first approach” is best so stop wasting your money and start exploring more ways to eat your vitamins through a nutritious diet. And yes, I was one of the ones who stood up but only because at the time I was just super lazy about taking anything 🤪

I always like to promote a exercise regime of both strength training and cardio but at the end of the day, if you can’t commit to either, please try to get those steps in. Walking is one of the most underrated cardiovascular activities you can do for yourself-and it’s free. Walking improves circulation, lowers your blood pressure, strengthens your legs, improves balance, reduces arthritis, lowers your risk of dementia and heart disease, increases endorphins, lowers stress, reduces depression…don’t think I need to keep going. And while I do appreciate the timeless “I walk all day at work,” please understand that this is most likely a movement your body is used to on an almost daily basis-I need extra on top of that for it to be significant. I do know that walking can be very weather-specific but with spring on its way, there’s no time like the present to set some goals with those feet of yours-so hop to it!

This is SUCH a great depiction of how different we are and how each of our fitness journeys need to be analyzed by no one other than yourself (and your healthcare professional if you’re using one). There are so many various factors that affect our weight such as genetics, age, s*x, metabolism, hormones…the list goes on and on. PLUS! Please know something VERY important: this should bring to light how incredibly inaccurate the number of calories “burned” on the treadmill (or any exercise machine) actually is. In fact, did you know that the percentage spans from 30-90% INACCURACY?!? That’s crazy to be that off!! With this in mind, imagine how inaccurate the weight loss apps are? I actually got into an argument with a well-known fitness app because they were stating a particular food at a particular calorie content, allowing my patient to believe they were only consuming a certain amount but were actually eating almost triple the calories unbeknownst to them!! Because let’s be honest: a slice of pizza in the Midwest is VERY different to a NY slice, am I right?!? Please use your common sense when it comes to these measures of calories-because if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!
