Second District Dental Society of New York

Second District Dental Society of New York SDDS represents dentists from Kings and Richmond Counties and is a component of the American Dental Association and the New York State Dental Association.

The Second District Dental Society (SDDS) represents the dentists from Kings County (Brooklyn) and Richmond County (Staten Island). We have approximately 1,500 members representing close to 70% of all active dentists in these areas. The Society was formed in 1868 and has been an active and committed representative for the dentists of our area since that time. We are the local component of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA) and the American Dental Association (ADA). Our Society is governed by a 25-member Board of Trustees. The Society also has representation to NYSDA (governors) and the ADA (delegates). The Second District Dental Society has one branch society, the Richmond County Dental Society. For the benefit of its membership, the Society also sponsors the programming of a number of established local study groups in Brooklyn and Staten Island. The Richmond County Dental Society has nearly 300 dentists living and working in the borough of Staten Island. This branch society of the SDDS provides opportunities for its members to meet monthly, conducts community outreach programs and education, and is involved with local issues affecting Staten Island's dental professionals.

Mark your calendars!

It's almost time for the SDDS Dr. Meryl J. Efron Memorial Lecture! Held annually, this presentation honors the memory of the late Dr. Meryl J. Efron, a past president of Richmond County Dental Society, who was a teacher and mentor to many in her community and organized dentistry.

This year’s two-part course, From Simple to Complex + The Complex Aesthetic Case will be presented by Dr. Joyce Bassett, a KOIS Center clinical instructor.

This innovative, fast-paced presentation will explore frequently seen problems that occur during restorative treatment and teach systematic techniques to both prevent and remedy these failures while developing presentation skills and verbiage to instill confidence with your patients and boost case acceptance.

This digitally generated approach will guide the dentist and expedite important design decisions, provide unique patient communication options, and improve the predictability of the aesthetic outcome. The course will simplify occlusion by combining dental facial treatment planning with function to explore aesthetics that are BUILT TO LAST.

is the New York State Dental Foundation’s fundraising campaign on the global day of giving that inspires hundreds of thousands of people to donate to their favorite charities each year... and they need our participation to make it a success.

Last year, donations made on fueled the Foundation’s mission to improve oral health care for all New Yorkers through a variety of programs in 2025. Donor support enabled them to:

Distribute thousands of oral hygiene kits to schools, shelters, and other organizations
Connect 75 veteran cases to pro bono dental care through Salute Vets with a Smile
Reimburse students for travel to screen 124 athletes at the Special Olympics State Games
Present 9 dental hygiene graduates with the $500 Stevenson Award
Underwrite oral cancer screenings, awareness, and education events
Screen infants and toddlers through the Early Head Start Oral Health Prevention Project
Host the first-ever Discovering Dentistry Symposium in partnership with Planet Smilez

Every dollar donated to the campaign will help bolster these initiatives and provide crucial funding to propel New York State to the forefront of innovative and compassionate oral health care for the vulnerable and underserved.
