Gui Zhi is a warm, spicy herb that gets qi and blood moving by opening the pores and improving circulation. It's helpful in the fall, because it brings warmth and movement to the lungs, skin, and joints, which can often get stagnant in colder weather. It’s the lead herb in the classic formula Gui Zhi Tang, which also includes Bai Shao, Sheng Jiang, Da Zao, and Zhi Gan Cao. This formula is best taken at the very first sign (or thought) that you might be sick. It’s traditionally followed by a bowl of warm congee or oatmeal, and you should wrap yourself in a blanket to encourage a mild sweat, which helps the body release the pathogen.

If you're interested in taking Gui Zhi Tang, or you want immune support this fall, come see me ☻

In Chinese medicine, the Lungs govern the skin, open the pores, and direct the flow of Wei Qi, which is similar to the immune system. The Spleen and Stomach generate Ying Qi, or nourishing energy from food. Sheng Jiang, aka fresh ginger, helps connect these systems by promoting a gentle sweat, supporting digestion, and calming nausea. This allows the body to release what it doesn’t need and defend itself against airborne and food-borne illness.

Recent studies suggest that fresh ginger can significantly reduce nausea, especially during early pregnancy, stimulate antiviral secretions in mucosal tissue, and shorten hospital stays in COVID-19 patients, particularly in older adults and those with chronic conditions.

So whether it’s for taste, digestion, or immune support, you really can’t go wrong with Sheng Jiang. If you’d like to learn more about how to make herbal decoctions with ginger or herbs that can address your specific health concerns, book a consultation with me. I'm back to my normal schedule starting in October :)

Ling Zhi (aka Reishi) calms the shen and is used to treat a TCM pattern called “Kidneys not grasping Lung Qi,” which corresponds in biomedical terms to asthma or difficulty taking a full, deep breath. The spores of Ling Zhi are often considered more potent than the fruiting body for managing these symptoms, though further research is needed to confirm this.
Modern clinical trials have begun to validate traditional uses of Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), showing benefits for fatigue, immune function, and overall well-being. In high-quality studies, Reishi extracts improved fatigue and energy in stress-related conditions, boosted immune markers in healthy adults, and eased symptoms while enhancing quality of life and immune function in cancer patients. Clearly, Reishi has earned its nickname, the “mushroom of immortality.” While it may not grant eternal life, it shows promising results for immune health, inflammation, respiratory function, and stress resilience.

Chen Pi, or aged tangerine peel, is more than just citrus rind. It is slowly aged to deepen its aroma and enhance its medicinal qualities. In Chinese medicine, Chen Pi regulates qi, dries dampness, and relieves bloating, nausea, and brain fog linked to digestive stagnation. The aging process enhances its ability to move qi and transform phlegm.

Book a consultation with me to learn how Chen Pi can restore movement and clarity in your body.
