🍓 FREEZE-DRIED FRUITS TO THE RESCUE!

Exploring Freeze-Dried Fruits!

Some kiddos are sensitive to wet or sticky textures (like many fresh fruits). Crunchy freeze-dried options are a great first step! They offer the same yummy flavors with a texture that’s less overwhelming and more predictable for sensory-sensitive eaters.

Once a child gets comfortable with the taste and visual exposure, we can slowly bridge to fresh versions through play, exploration, and low-pressure tasting. This supports food flexibility while respecting their sensory needs.

Here at Therapy Matters NY SLP, we’re exploring freeze-dried fruits using our Steps-to-Eating hierarchy — licking, touching, tasting, and of course, watching ourselves is super fun too! 😋

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀

Today we’re talking about the color of the day… **GREEN** 💚

Did you know that green is often one of the *least liked* food colors among children?

Many feeding researchers suggest this may connect back to very early feeding experiences. One of the first vegetables many babies try is broccoli 🥦 — and while it’s wonderfully nutritious, it can sometimes cause gas or bloating in little tummies.

Babies are incredibly smart and can build associations FAST.
Green = gassy
Green = discomfort

Very baby-brilliant 🧠✨

So what do we do: we understand.
Resistance to green foods may not be just “picky.” It may just be an early association doing its job.

That’s exactly why we continue gentle, pressure-free exposure in a safe and playful environment 💚

Before we know it, new associations are built:

🥑 Avocado = creamy & fun
🥒 Cucumber = crunchy & refreshing
GREEN = YUM 😋

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀💚

Today’s myofunctional evaluation is of an 8-year-old with chief complaints including mouth breathing, drooling, snoring, and sleeping with the mouth open, as well as speech/articulation issues.

We have our tools ready to help us achieve:
👃🏼Nasal breathing with lips closed
👅 Tongue suctioned to the palate with the tip on the "spot"
💬 Better range of motion and coordination of the muscles of the lips, tongue, and jaw, allowing for mature speech and swallowing

☝🏼Important! Making sure the airway is open and nasal breathing is possible is key before using some of these tools, and in fully tackling our goals.

✨️ Meet the team, Liz ✨️

As the lead provider of myofunctional therapy at Therapy Matters NY SLP for the past 5 years, Elizabeth utilizes an interdisciplinary approach in conjunction with her client’s dental and orthodontic team, as well as a holistic approach in treating her clients. This approach allows not only to treat the symptoms, but also to address the root causes of any muscle dysfunction in order to establish improved sleep quality, proper nasal breathing, tongue posture, and muscle function for optimal speech and swallowing.

Elizabeth’s certifications include training in myofunctional disorders from the International Association of Orofacial Myology, Talk Tools Feeding Therapy: A Sensory Motor Approach, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), and VitalStim.

Elizabeth is dedicated to providing a fun and supportive environment, with a strong clinical foundation, for each of her clients so that they can reach their highest potential. She has clinical experience in various adult and pediatric settings, and has treated pathologies ranging from voice, aphasia, articulation, feeding aversions, swallowing disorders, and dysarthria/apraxia of speech.

Additionally, Elizabeth is a certified energy healing practitioner. Similarly, in the treatment of myofunctional disorders, Elizabeth considers the interconnectedness of the body’s systems, as well as the mind-body connection, when determining the sources and necessary modalities for releasing any blockages in a client’s energy field.
