Ancient Song

Ancient Song Ancient Song is a national birth justice organization.

We do this by ensuring that all pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people of color have access to high-quality, holistic doula care and services regardless of their ability to pay. We provide doula training and services, offer community education, and advocate for policy change to support reproductive and birth justice.

We're making our doula trainings even more accessible. Join us beginning in July for a completely virtual full-spectrum doula training!

If you're new here, we're Ancient Song, a national birth justice organization working to eliminate maternal and infant mortality and morbidity among low-income Black and Latinx people. One of the ways in which we do this is by providing culturally competent full-spectrum doula training because evidence shows doulas have a positive impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Registration for our virtual training is now open! You can learn more by visiting bit.ly/virtualdoula26 and if you have questions, come to our info session (on Zoom) May 6th at 6:30 PM! Registration is required at bit.ly/ancientsongdoulainfo

Less than 50 years ago a woman could be fired simply for being pregnant and while yes, it's technically illegal now, how many of you have been asked about your kids or plans to have a family when in a job interview?

Maternal justice extends beyond birth. Mothers are penalized by employers all the time. From not being hired or promoted to not being provided with time to pump or by being paid less than their male counterparts, it's obvious this fight is far from over.

Having a baby in 2026? ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿฝ That baby will head to kindergarten in 2031, get their driver's license in 2042, graduate high school in 2044, and celebrate their 21st birthday in 2047 ๐Ÿฅน

It seems far away but any parent will tell you just how quickly it all happens. The decisions we make today, the policies we advocate for, the leaders we elect, the communities we build... those will become the foundation for these babies' futures. It's up to us to make sure these milestones are met with joy and optimism. They are the future. We are responsible for making sure it's a good one.

Well well well... if it isn't what we've been saying all along! The research is there. We know that having doulas involved in your labor means a reduced rate of negative birth outcomes and in a country that has the highest maternal mortality rate, we need all the help we can get.

Doulas shouldn't be a luxury. They should be the standard. Women shouldn't have to earn a safe birth.

C-sections account for nearly 1 in 3 births in the U.S. and while they can be lifesaving for mom and for baby, they aren't always medically necessary.

Part of our work at Ancient Song is giving expecting parents the education, tools, and resources to advocate for the birth experience they desire.

Too often, women are forced or scared into c-section deliveries that can cause other complications, longer recovery times, and birth trauma. This combined with the social stigma of a c-section can leave those mothers feeling angry, ashamed, or depressed. We want you to know those are not your feelings to carry. No matter how you brought your baby into this world, you. gave. birth.

C-section. Water. Vaginal. VBAC. These are all birth. They are all hard. They are all brave.

When we say respect and care for your mama, we're talking about mother earth too because the two cannot be separated. Climate justice is maternal health justice. ๐ŸŒŽ ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿคฐ๐Ÿฝ

Climate change has a direct impact on the health and wellness of pregnant mothers and their babies and it disproportionately impacts Black mothers! When we fight for safe drinking water, cleaner air, more trees, and access to community gardens, it's not just about the planet, it's about our families and our futures.

It's estimated that extreme heat exposure during pregnancy is associated with a 27% increase in the risk of experiencing severe maternal morbidity, with Black mothers disproportionately impacted.

One of the ways we are addressing this at Ancient Song is by endorsing the Protecting Moms and Babies Against Climate Change Act which would:

๐Ÿ’ฐ Invest in community-based programs to identify and address climate change related maternal and infant health risks, particularly in communities of color.

๐Ÿซ Provide funding to health professional schools to prepare future nurses, doctors, and other health care workers to address climate change-related risks for patients.

๐ŸŒž Establish an NIH consortium to advance research on climate change and maternal & infant health.

๐Ÿคฐ๐ŸฝDevelop a comprehensive strategy to identify and designate climate change risk zones for pregnant and postpartum people and their babies.

YOU can help by contacting your elected officials and letting them know this is legislation that is important to you. Spread awareness! Voice your concerns and get involved in your community whenever you can.

This weekend! ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ As we think about Black maternal health and the path forward, we know that naturally, so much of our work centers on women but we are making a conscious effort to bring fathers to the forefront of the conversation as well.

Whether thatโ€™s for birth support preparedness, advocacy tips, or community building with other dads, we believe a fatherโ€™s role is crucial and we want your voices heard too.

Join us for one of our first father focused events happening April 26th! The Fathers for Birth Justice Hike creates space for dads, partners, and families to connect, reflect, and learn how their presence and advocacy can positively impact maternal health outcomes.

"When you are living for something more than yourself, living for them babies, your grind is different, your hustle is different, your tolerance is different, what you're willing to put up with is different." shares how the transition to motherhood transformed the way she works, lives, and creates.

It's transformational, right? How did motherhood immediately change you?

We didn't get here by accident. The maternal health crisis our mothers are facing was constructed over time. It was created when birth was medicalized, doulas and midwives were invalidated and forced out, and mothers' intuition about their own bodies was disregarded.

This system was not designed to keep us safe. So it's time to dismantle it.

At Ancient Song, we're pushing back. We're returning to our roots. We're providing spaces that are safe and compassionate because we understand birth is sacred and we don't believe pregnancy should be a death sentence.

Let's look at paid maternity leave around the world, shall we?

๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡ท Croatia - 58 weeks with 100% pay until 6 months after birth, then a flat-rate benefit

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom - 52 weeks with 6 weeks paid at 90%, and a flat rate from weeks 7-39 (weeks 40-52 unpaid)

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Australia - 52 weeks leave with 18 weeks paid at the federal minimum wage

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฆ Bosnia 52 weeks paid at 50-100%

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ช Montenegro 52 weeks paid at 100%

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Ireland 42 weeks leave at 80-100% for 26 weeks

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฐ North Macedonia 39 weeks at 100%

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น Italy 22 weeks at 80%

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Russia 20 weeks at 100%

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช Estonia 20 weeks at 100%

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France 18 weeks at 100%

WE COULD KEEP GOING!!! The fact remains the United States is the ONLY high income country that does not guarantee paid maternity leave. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ 0 weeks. 0 pay.

No universal paid maternity leave. No guaranteed time to heal. No real protection for far too many families.

That is not accidental. It is a policy choice. โ€ผ๏ธ

Until every family has guaranteed paid leave, this system will continue to fail the very people it depends on.

You can take action. Call your representatives. Push for federal paid leave. Support policies that protect birthing people and families. Share this post and refuse to normalize this cruelty. ๐Ÿ“ฒ
