Attune & Embody Psychotherapy

Attune & Embody Psychotherapy We offer telehealth psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups throughout NY State. We also offer a flexible sliding scale.

Our offers telehealth psychotherapy for individuals, families, and groups throughout NY State. Our practice is broadly focused on the task of embodiment and exploring the joys and challenges of having a human body. Often, this means working at the intersections of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disability and chronic illness, religious or spiritual belief systems, and other aspects of our identities. This process often involves examining the effects of past trauma, exploring our immediate social environments, and addressing the impact of cultural and political climates on our day-to-day experiences and worldview. The principles of existentialist psychotherapy assert that our lives coalesce and take shape around the meaning we ourselves make of our lived experiences. Often, we experience discrimination because both our bodies and identities are stigmatized; the principles and practice of feminist psychotherapy is predicated on the belief that many of us do not have the luxury of living an apolitical life when we ourselves (and our larger communities) experience a lack of physical, emotional, legal, and socioeconomic security. Frequently, we encounter situations in our present-day lives that feel similar to unresolved incidents from our past. These current situations trigger feelings of fear, apprehension, or even panic, and can lead to distress in the here and now. We learned certain coping skills to survive and tolerate these early unresolved issues, such as shutting down, avoiding discomfort, raging, or striving to please others, but these strategies may no longer serve us. Trauma-informed psychotherapy is grounded in an understanding of the neurological, biological, psychological, and social effects of trauma and the prevalence of these experiences since many people have experienced some type of trauma in their lives. We believe that a therapist’ primary objectives is to support clients in cultivating a sense of self-trust and safety, so they can begin to explore and resolve past traumatic experiences and the echoes of traumatic events that carry forward into the present and future. We are in-network with Cigna and accept most other insurance as an out-of-network provider. Please contact us for a free 15-minute phone or video consultation.

I'm really looking forward to this 3 CEU workshop I was invited to present at LSU on 11/15. The workshop description is below; if you have any questions, please reach out to us at info@attune-embody.com. Hope to see some of you there!

LGBTQIA+ adolescents and adults who experience stressful events related to mental health or medical care may report symptoms of post-traumatic stress such as intrusive thoughts or images, flashbacks, nightmares, and distress. As
LGBTQIA+ people are at higher risk than their cisgender peers to experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), discrimination, interpersonal trauma or abuse, and have often had greater exposure to medical or mental health systems, they may be predisposed to developing post-traumatic stress in the wake of a medical crisis.

Clinicians must better understand, assess, and treat medical trauma in their work with LGBTQIA+ people, particularly in response to legislative, legal, and ethical challenges presented in the United States.

In this workshop, we will explore interventions on individual and systems levels and discuss advocacy and self-advocacy practices that can be implemented by clinicians, other professionals, and our clients themselves.

Dr. Ronica Mukerjee and I are thrilled to announce our LGBTQIA+ weekend retreat, utilizing Ketamine-assisted therapy to treat PTSD, clinical depression, and other mental health concerns, all within a comfortable community space. Hosted at the Little Wolf Collective in Peekskill, this 2-day experiential retreat centers LGBTQIA+ experience and features complimentary therapies; acupuncture is available for an additional fee. We've done our best to keep the cost reasonable, so the $800 fee includes an intake and medical assessment, one virtual preparation session, mindfulness and movement, two experiential sessions (one per day), and three integration circles -- one at the end of each day and two weeks after the weekend has concluded. Announcing a weekly group for partners of transgender & nonbinary adults! We often celebrate life's major milestones with the ones we love. When our loved one decides to take the important step of coming out as transgender and planning their social and/or medical transition, what does that mean for our own identity and sense of self? While we may want to support our trans loved one, partners are also in need and deserving of support; often, partners feel isolated from their communities and even feel guilty or selfish about expressing their own needs, and may feel isolated from our communities, or feel invisible. This weekly group will provide space for partners to process their own experiences.

This weekly group will be facilitated by Candice Comisi MHC-LP. Please visit this link to register: https://forms.gle/zARenvtBfyZi4gKD9

We will address issues such as:
Understanding or expanding definitions of gender
Cultural approaches and understandings of gender
Feeling isolated as a partner of a trans or nonbinary person
Exploring how your own gender or sexual identity may or may not be affected
Reflecting on how friendships and other relationships may change
When a partner comes out
Gender-affirming surgeries

There will be structured time for education, Q&A with facilitators, socialization, and thoughtful reflection.

Are you the partner of a trans or non-binary person in the process of coming out or planning social or medical transition? Meet with other partners in a space designed for honest reflection, respect, and support. Whether your partner recently came out or wishes to take steps to pursue gender-affirmi...

For transfem people embarking on the journey of parenthood, it can feel like there is no established blueprint to guide one’s path. Unique challenges in navigating parenting tasks like interacting with school staff, going to the playground, and socializing with other parents can contribute to a debilitating sense of isolation and powerlessness for transfem parents. Without common language and an understanding environment in which to discuss these experiences, everyday obstacles can add up and become overwhelming.

This ongoing support group for transfem parents seeks to hold a space where group members can build community, develop analysis and strategy around challenging life experiences, celebrate themselves and each other, and give and receive emotional support in a grounding, affirming environment. The group will be facilitated by a clinical social worker, but active participation, collaboration, and leadership by group members will be strongly encouraged as a central part of the group’s functioning. Transfem Parents’ Club! is open to all transfem parents over the age of 21 who live in the United States. Meetings will take place weekly via Zoom at 6:00 EST on Wednesdays.

Topics to be explored include:
-Navigating safety in public spaces, alone and with kiddos
-Unpacking societal messaging about transfem identities
-Family relationships and co-parenting
-Practicing self-care and managing burnout
-Holding space for your identities as both an individual and a parent
-Relationships with daycare/school contacts
-Building rest, healing, and meaningful connection into everyday life

Limited spaces are available for our new group, Taking Care of Business: An Executive Functioning Skill-Building Group for Q***r, Trans & Nonbinary People. You can register by filling out the quick form which can be found through the link in my bio!

Facilitated by Jackson Mittler, a 2nd year MSW intern from Columbia University, the group will meet every Wednesday starting December 1st for 8 sessions. TCB will be structured in such a way that each of the 8 sessions will stand on its own, but we recommend making the commitment to attend each week, if you are able. In the group, we'll learn more about executive functioning and work together to develop strategies for managing time, prioritizing and initiating tasks, planning, and organizing, in a relaxed, low-pressure environment.

This group will center the experiences of trans and nonbinary people, but q***r cisgender people are welcome to attend! We are in-network with Cigna and will provide invoices for those with out-of-network benefits that cover group therapy, and are offering a sliding scale of $25-$75 for those without this insurance coverage. Please email info@karalynvioleta.com for more information about the sliding scale or using insurance. We can assist with confirming insurance coverage, so feel free to reach out to our Administrative Coordinator, Jesse. You can also reach Jesse by calling or texting 347-370-9175.

If you have any questions about the group, Jackson can be contacted at jackson@karalynvioleta.com.

Trauma-informed and LGBTQ-affirming therapy, in the heart of Brooklyn

I’m a Brooklyn-based clinical social worker offering both in-person and secure telehealth services. I take a holistic and humanistic approach, relating to you as a unique individual with your own experiences, desires, and history. My style is relational, existential, and feminist, and I endeavor to seamlessly blend various therapeutic modalities to create a treatment approach that works for each client.

My professional training is in psychodynamic psychotherapy and evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavioral, cognitive processing, and mindfulness-based therapies. I frequently work with chronic pain/chronic health issues and help my clients manage distress around physical discomfort. My practice is centered around bodily autonomy and the belief that every body is a good body. I have specialized training and expertise in working with transgender, non-binary, and q***r youth and adults. I write letters for trans and non-binary people pursuing gender-affirming surgeries (following an informed consent model) and offer these services to anyone residing in NY State. I’ve earned my 3-year certificate in LGBTQ-affirming psychotherapy and sit on the executive committee of the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy’s Center for Gender & Sexuality. I’ve presented my work at conferences, been published in peer-reviewed journals and am co-editor of the book ‘Sex, Sexuality and Trans Identities: Clinical Guidance for Psychotherapists and Counselors,’ forthcoming from Jessica Kingsley Press (2019).
