On Wednesday, May 6th, the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center WIC Program proudly hosted its annual Mother’s Day event, celebrating the strength, dedication, and resilience of mothers and families in our community. This special occasion highlighted the importance of nurturing healthy beginnings and supporting lifelong wellness, core values at the heart of the WIC mission to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children through nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and access to healthy foods.

We were thrilled to have a tremendous turnout, bringing together families for a day filled with meaningful engagement and celebration. The event featured nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion, a live food demonstration using WIC-approved foods, and interactive games with prizes for participants. It was a joyful opportunity to honor mothers while reinforcing the importance of healthy habits for growing families.

Knowing the type of stroke can make all the difference when every second counts. For Stroke Awareness Month, we’re breaking down the three main types to help you stay informed and prepared.

🧠 Types of Stroke

-Ischemic Stroke: The most common type, caused by a blood clot blocking blood flow to the brain.

-Hemorrhagic Stroke: Occurs when a weakened blood vessel ruptures and causes bleeding in the brain.

-TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack): Often called a "mini-stroke," this is a temporary blockage that serves as a serious warning sign for future strokes.

🕒 Act F.A.S.T.
Regardless of the type, immediate medical attention is critical. Remember the signs:

Face Drooping

Arm Weakness

Speech Difficulty

💜 What a beautiful day for our 1st Annual Steps for Support: Maternal Mental Health Awareness Walk! 💜

Today, families, community partners, staff, and supporters came together to walk in solidarity for maternal mental health awareness — reminding every mother and family that they are not alone.

The purpose of this walk was to raise awareness about maternal mental health, reduce stigma surrounding postpartum depression and anxiety, encourage open conversations, and strengthen community support for pregnant and postpartum families. Through every step, we honored the importance of emotional wellness during pregnancy and after birth.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, shared their stories, and helped create a safe and supportive space for our community. Seeing families walking together, pushing strollers, laughing, connecting, and supporting one another truly showed the power of community collaboration and compassion.

A special thank you to our partners, participants, and staff who helped make this event a success. Together, we continue building a stronger, healthier, and more supportive community for mothers, babies, and families.

💜 Because maternal mental health matters.
💜 Because support matters.
💜 Because no mother should ever feel alone.

Wyckoff is proud to continue supporting Stroke Awareness Month! Last week, we emphasized the importance of recognizing stroke signs. But recognizing signs isn't enough; we must also work together to prevent strokes before they happen.

The overwhelming majority of strokes are preventable. The powerful graphic we're sharing today- "STROKE PREVENTION: PROTECT YOUR BRAIN"- highlights eight critical health habits that can drastically reduce your risk. As we emphasized, "Small choices today can help prevent a stroke tomorrow."

Your brain health matters. We encourage you to focus on managing risk factors such as blood pressure and diabetes, leading an active lifestyle, and making healthy nutritional choices. These habits are essential for building a stronger heart and a resilient mind.

As a reminder, if you see the signs of a stroke, Act FAST:

B – Balance Loss
E – Eyesight Issues
F – Face Drooping
A – Arm Weakness
S – Speech Difficulty
T – Time to Call 911

A healthier community starts with prevention, and we are here for you every step of the way. If you are struggling with risk factor management or need resources to start a new healthy habit, please visit the link in our bio for support.

This year’s National Nutrition Month theme, “Discover the Power of Nutrition,” highlights how informed food choices and healthy habits support growth, development, and overall well-being at every stage of life. Throughout March, the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center (WHMC) WIC Program supported this theme by providing families with nutrition education, promoting breastfeeding, and highlighting how WIC services can support healthy choices.

On March 3rd, the WHMC WIC Program participated in a baby shower event, hosted by the PICHC Program, where WIC staff introduced the theme and shared how WIC services help families harness the power of nutrition from the very beginning.
On March 12th, the WHMC WIC Program hosted a prenatal event focused on the critical role of balanced nutrition during pregnancy, the importance of prenatal vitamins, and education on preeclampsia to support healthy pregnancies and outcomes.

On March 17th, the WHMC WIC and PICHC Programs co-hosted a National Nutrition Month event centered on complementary feeding, providing families with hands-on nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and live food demonstrations that showed how to prepare homemade baby food and nutritious smoothies using WIC benefits, helping families confidently put the power of nutrition into practice at home.
