This week, the Michigan social work community has mourned the heartbreaking loss of one of our colleagues, Jackie Jo Torrez. Jackie was a "kind, vibrant soul who cared deeply for those around her." Sadly, her life was taken far too soon in an act of domestic violence last Friday.

Our love goes out to Jackie's family and friends, and her colleagues at the McDowell Healing Arts Center in Saginaw, where she had be practicing as a clinical therapist.

“It brings my heart joy to remember her contagious laugh, her huge heart, and her determination to help other women combat and work through domestic violence,” said MHAC Founder Dr. Melvin C. McDowell Jr.. “Jackie loved her job, she loved and advocated for her clients, and she will forever be loved and missed. MHAC won’t be the same without you, Jackie Jo.”

Jackie's family has put together a Gofundme to help support funeral costs and for ongoing support for Jackie's four year old daughter. If you would like to make a donation, please do so at https://www.gofundme.com/f/honoring-jackie-jo-torrez-support-needed.

Domestic violence is a devastating reality that affects far too many lives. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please know that help is available. Organizations like the National Domestic Violence Hotline (800-799-7233) offer confidential support 24/7. No one should have to suffer in silence.
