This World Mental Health Day, StartCare is using our voice to break the silence around stigma in mental health and substance use among Black and Brown men.

We recently joined the friends and family of Michael K. Williams to honor his life and legacy with a walk celebrating his commitment to community and change. By speaking openly, challenging misconceptions, and leading with compassion, we can build a culture where seeking care is a sign of strength.

This message is at the heart of our mission and lives on through the Michael K. Williams Legacy Award, which will be presented to Malik Yoba at StartCare’s 56th Celebration.

🤝StartCare in the Community

Our People & Culture team, along with CEO Jonnel Doris, joined the Small Business Services Healthcare Fair to connect with partners and highlight workforce programs that make a difference, like Individual Training Grants. These grants help New Yorkers access funding for tuition, registration, testing, and books for in-demand training programs such as the CASAC Training Grant.

Thank you to Commissioner Dynishal Gross and the SBS team for helping grow the next generation of healthcare professionals and strengthening providers like StartCare.

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month.

A time to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support individuals and families affected by addiction.
At StartCare, we’re working across communities to reduce harm, expand access, and empower change. One of the many ways we do this is through our Harm Reduction Training Program, led by our Peer Engagement Team. These trainings connect community members with resources to help those facing mental health or substance use challenges in a caring, trauma-informed way. An important part of the program includes Narcan trainings, which empowers people to save lives within their own communities.

Together, we can break stigma, save lives, and build a healthier future for all.

If you or someone you know needs help:
📞 Call 988 for free, confidential mental health or substance use support
🚨 Call 911 for emergencies
🏠 Call 311 for housing or case management assistance

This Health Literacy Month, we’re spotlighting our CEO, Jonnel Doris, on the Schneps Connects podcast: “Reimagining Community Health.”

In this episode, Jonnel shares how StartCare is expanding its mission beyond clinical care by addressing housing, creating opportunities for job training, and innovating person-centered approaches to care as essential parts of health. He also reflects on his own journey and why true health equity begins with helping people access, understand, and use health information to make informed choices.
