We have the power to control our breath, so do we have the power to control our reactions.
The 4-7-8 breathing is also know as the relaxing breath in yoga traditions, and is a handy self-soothe technique. It has helped me tremendously in anxiety-inducing moments of my life.
The technique is simple:
1️⃣ Breath out completely and rest the tip of your tongue behind the roof of the mouth
2️⃣ Breath in for a count for 4
3️⃣ Hold the breath for a count of 7
4️⃣ Exhale the breath through the mouth, making a “whoosh” sound, for a count of 8,
5️⃣ Repeat the sequence 4x as one rep.
Begin the practice with one rep. Once you’re familiar, you can do 2-4 reps at a time, twice a day, or anytime you need a moment to calm any overwhelming thoughts.
