Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT), also known as vacuum-assisted wound closure or simply “Wound VAC”, is an advanced wound management system that uses gentle, continuous (or intermittent) suction to help wounds heal faster.
Here’s how it works:
Eliminates excess fluid from the wound
Protects the wound from germs
Increases blood supply to the wound site
Fosters the growth of healthy new tissue
It’s often used together with pain management, debridement, and irrigation for the best results.
How the Wound VAC Therapy Works:
1. Packing the wound — Sterile foam is cut to size and gently placed into the cleaned wound.
2. Dressing the wound — A special polyurethane dressing creates an airtight seal.
3. Connecting the pump — A small vacuum pump is attached via tubing. It gently pulls fluid and drainage into a collection container.
4. Programming the pump — The suction is set (typically -125 mmHg) and can be adjusted for your comfort.
Once started, the therapy works 24/7 — even after you go home!
Patients receive clear instructions and continue treatment in the comfort of their own home.
This proven treatment is highly effective for many acute and chronic wounds.
