As the eyes age, the vitreous gel shrinks and can detach from the retina. This detachment, or pulling, can cause small amounts of bleeding. This happens more commonly for people who are very nearsighted or who have had cataract surgery. Other less common causes include other eye surgeries, eye injuries, or crystal-like deposits that form in the vitreous.

While not typically cause for alarm, flashes of light may indicate a medical emergency called a retinal tear or detachment. If you experience a sudden onset of floaters or a partial loss of the field of vision, it is important to see your eye doctor right away.

Light flashes can also occur when the vitreous shrinks and pulls on the retina. They may also be caused by migraines. This can be the case when the flashes are present in one or both eyes and last between 10 and 20 minutes. This is caused by a spasm of blood vessels in the brain, which may be followed by a migraine headache. It is possible to experience the flashes of light or blind spots without the headache, called an ocular migraine.

Floaters present as small spots in your field of vision. The vitreous body, a clear gel that fills the inside of the eye, can form clumps resulting in floaters. Other causes of floaters include small pieces of protein or other material that were trapped in the vitreous during the formation of the eye.

Floaters are seen as shadows by the retina, the light-sensitive inner layer of the eye. They can take on various forms such as dots, threads, or cobwebs. Floaters move as the eye moves and may move away as you try to look at them.
