1. Deep tissue massage is often thought of as painful. Massage isn't supposed to be painful. In fact, if you are in pain during your massage, your massage therapist wants you to speak up! Deep tissue massage might feel a little uncomfortable at times but it should not be painful.
2. I noticed a lot of people think deep tissue massage is only for those who play sports (professionally or as a hobby). This is not true! Anyone can benefit from deep tissue massage. Some do have tight muscles from sports, yes. But you can also get tight muscles from repetitive motions at work, playing with your dog, moving, and lots of other every day activities.
3. Deep tissue will not and cannot solve all of your aches and pains. Coming in for a deep tissue massage when your back hurts is not enough. A lot of times more is needed to help chronic muscle tension. Everyone has different needs and goals but a wellness plan tailored to each individual can be very beneficial. If you're not sure where to start, your massage therapist, chiropractor, or acupuncturist will probably have some recommendations.
4. Deep tissue massage is not the same as firm pressure. You can get a general massage with firm pressure but it's not always addressing deeper muscle tension. What really separates deep tissue massage from a more general massage with firm pressure is focus. Is the focus on a quick maintenance massage, relaxation, or is it on addressing deeper tension?
At the end of the day, only you can decide if deep tissue massage is right for you. Hopefully this information helps you make that decision.
