Therapists often describe client “resistance” as a barrier in EMDR. But from an IFS lens, resistance isn’t defiance, it’s protection.
Parts of our clients show up to keep them safe, even if it looks like avoidance or shutdown. When we honor those protective parts, instead of pushing against them, the healing process unfolds with more compassion and less struggle.
This shift is what makes an IFS-informed approach to EMDR so powerful. It transforms “stuck” moments into opportunities for deeper connection.
